Kailyn Jager had her first double-double of the season
SAN JOSÉ, Calif. – Despite a season-high 17 kills by Kailyn Jager, Boise State lost its first match of its California road swing to San José State in four sets (18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23) on Thursday in Spartan Gym.
The Broncos (16-10, 8-7 MW) were unable to match their first set performance after taking down the Spartans (12-14, 7-8 MW) to start the match. San José State out-hit Boise State, .275 to .153, over the final three sets and took the victory to split the season series between the two teams.
Jager led all attackers with a match-high 17 kills and also added 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. The senior outside hitter hit .378 on her 37 attacks (three errors).
Layla Smith was the only other Bronco to reach double-figures in kills. The junior had 10 kills on 20 attacks (one error, .450 hitting pct.).
Bre Mitchell recorded 23 digs, which were her second-most in a match this year and third 20-dig effort of the season.
Although the first set featured 12 ties and six lead changes, Boise State cruised in the set, behind nine kills from Jager and a .400 team attack percentage. The set was all square at 16-16, but Jager had five kills over the final 11 points to give the set to the Broncos.
In the second, San José State raced out to a 9-2 advantage as Boise State surrendered two aces in the early going. Over the course of the second, the Broncos could not evade the Spartan block as San José State had six of its 10 blocks in the match during the set and held Boise State to a .108 hitting percentage.
Neither side broke away in the third, but the Broncos had only 10 kills against six errors on 38 swings as they were slowed down offensively. Boise State trailed by two at 19-17, and thought it pulled within one but a successful challenge by the Spartans reversed a point and gave them a lead at 20-17. The two teams traded points until a kill by the Spartans out of their timeout made it 23-20 and helped them close out the set to go up 2-1 in the match.
Boise State led early in the fourth, and was up 16-13 following a kill by Jager, but the Spartans tied it up at 16-16 with a brief 3-0 run. It was later tied at 22-22 following a kill by Smith coming out of a Boise State timeout, but three kills over the final four points gave the Spartans their second win in a row.
