Boise State had its highest attack percentage of the season in the win over the Bulldogs
FRESNO, Calif. – Four different Broncos had at least nine kills and Boise State had its highest hitting percentage in a match this season as the Broncos swept Fresno State (25-15, 25-20, 25-21) on Saturday in the Save Mart Center.
The Broncos (17-10, 9-7 MW) hit .348, which was the first time all season they recorded a hitting percentage above .300 for an entire match. Boise State finished with 49 kills, its most in a three-set match since the first meeting of the season against Fresno State (6-21, 2-13 MW) on Oct. 2 (50).
Layla Smith led all Broncos with 10 kills. The junior middle blocker was clean on all 15 of her swings as she registered a .667 attack percentage.
In addition to Smith, three other Broncos had nine kills: Sydney Dreves, Kailyn Jager and Eliza Sharp. All four attackers hit at least .381 as Dreves (.400) and Jager (.381) were efficient on the outside while the middle blocker Sharp, who also turned in a team-high four blocks, had a .467 attack percentage.Â
Helping keep the offense going for the Broncos were five aces by Boise State from the service line. Bella McGirr had two while Jager, Arianna Bilby and Lilli Etter each had one.
The victory also gave the Broncos their second regular season sweep of Fresno State in the last three seasons and eighth since 2014.
The Broncos never trailed in the first, despite Fresno State hitting .464, and went on a 5-0 run to make it 10-3 to force Fresno State to call an early timeout. The stoppage was not enough, though, as the Broncos scored nine of the next 16 points to make Fresno State call its final timeout and take a 19-9 lead. L. Smith and Sharp had two kills apiece in between the two Bulldog timeouts. Jager, meanwhile, closed out the set with her fourth kill of the day.
Boise State staved off a late comeback attempt by Fresno State in the second set. The Broncos led by six at 17-11, but the Bulldogs brought it within two at 21-19 on a block. However, a kill by Sharp made it 22-19 and then a combo block by Jager and L. Smith forced Fresno State to call a timeout at 23-19. An ace by McGirr was later followed up by one of L. Smith's two kills in the set to give Boise the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Fresno State led 15-14 in the third, its latest lead in a set in the match up to that point. However, Sharp's eighth kill of the day on a slide quickly evened it before another kill by Sharp made it 16-15. The Broncos never trailed through the remainder of the set while Dreves and Bilby each had a team-best four kills in the final set.
