Broncos Outlast Bobcats; Collect Third-Straight Victory

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State outlasted Montana State, 62-58, on Saturday afternoon at ExtraMile Arena.

Extending its winning streak to three games, Boise State (3-1) had four double-digit scorers. The team was led by Javan Buchanan, who registered a game-high 19 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Andrew Meadow shot 5-for-9 from the field and totaled 14 points and four rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Drew Fielder notched 13 points and
added five boards and one block.

Dylan Andrews added 10 points, five rebounds and five assists, while making eight of his nine free throw attempts. Pearson Carmichael, the only reserve to score in Saturday's game, pitched in with six points.

Montana State (1-4) only had one player score in double figures. Davian Brown recorded 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

The first half of Saturday's game featured identical shooting from the Broncos and Bobcats. Both teams made 11 of their 27 field goal attempts, with neither team leading by more than eight points in the period.

Four Broncos scored at least six points in the half, highlighted by Fielder who paced all players with 10. He shot 4-for-6 and added three rebounds in the first 20-minute session.
Boise State led for nearly 16 minutes in the frame and scored on 50 percent of its possessions. Tallying 14 points in the paint and outrebounding Montana State by six, the Broncos led by five at the intermission.

To begin the second half, the Broncos scored 10 of the first 14 points. Boise State's five-point halftime lead swelled to 11—its largest of the game—on consecutive three-point baskets by Buchanan.

Following the Broncos' run, Montana State responded in kind with 15 unanswered points. The Bobcats erased their deficit and surged ahead by four with 11:37 to play.

With 70 seconds on the clock, Buchanan scored on an old-fashioned three-point play, giving Boise State a two-point lead. The Broncos extended their advantage in the final seconds on two made free throws by Andrews, sealing the game.

In total, Boise State scored the final seven points of the game, with Buchanan and Andrews accounting for all seven. The Broncos shot just 33.3 percent, but limited Montana State to 28 points in the second half.

  • Boise State held the Bobcats to 58 points, signifying the 92nd the team had limited the opposition to 60 points or fewer in associate head coach Mike Burns' tenure. The team is 86-6 in those contests.
  • Javan Buchanan collected season highs in points (19) and rebounds (9).
  • Andrew Meadow, who has scored in double figures in all four games this season, tied his career high with four made three-pointers.
  • With six rebounds on Saturday, RJ Keene II now has 22, tying for the most by a Mountain West guard this season.
