
Broncos Fall in Overtime Thriller

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Boise State women's basketball dropped a heartbreaking overtime thriller to New Mexico, 88-83, on Thursday evening in The Pit.
Trailing 85-81 with under a minute remaining in the additional period, Dani Bayes converted a difficult right-handed scoop layup to cut the lead to two with 34.7 seconds on the clock. On the ensuing Lobo (14-12, 7-6 MW) possession, Viane Cumber drilled a deep 3-pointer with six seconds left to claim the victory.
Abby Muse led the Broncos (15-11, 5-8 Mountain West) in the loss, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Redshirt junior walk-on Josee Steadman had a noteworthy performance off the bench, scoring a season-high 17 points off a 7-of-12 shooting performance. Bayes and Elodie Lalotte each added 11 points in the effort.
Boise State opened the contest by racing out to a 10-7 lead by the first media timeout. Mya Hansen ended the quarter scoring five-straight points for the squad - including a layup to beat the buzzer - to take a 15-14 first-quarter advantage.
Steadman and Muse combined to score eight points early in the second frame to snag a 23-19 lead, but a 10-0 run gave New Mexico a six-point advantage midway through the quarter. Teryn Gardner broke the run with a corner 3-pointer, but the Lobos extended their lead to eight with 2:17 remaining in the half. Bayes responded with a corner 3-pointer of her own, and Steadman converted a layup at the buzzer as Boise State cut the deficit to 38-33 at intermission.
Bayes continued her hot streak, coming out of the break with a pair of 3-pointers, then found Elodie Lalotte for a layup to cut the lead to 43-41. Bayes, Lalotte and Steadman combined to score 17 of the team's 22 points in the quarter as the Broncos trailed the Lobos 56-55 entering the final frame.
After the two teams exchanged baskets to open the fourth quarter, New Mexico stretched the lead to seven with six minutes to go. Muse answered the call, netting eight points in the period to cut the deficit to 70-68 with 2:52 remaining. After New Mexico went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, Hansen drew a foul and converted both free throw attempts to cut the lead to one.
The Lobos responded with a layup, but Pasco tied the game at 73 with a corner 3-pointer with 1:15 remaining. New Mexico was fouled on the other end and converted both free throws to take a two-point lead. Pasco missed a floater on the ensuing possession, but Steadman was fouled on the putback attempt and tied the game at 75 with 41 seconds left in regulation.
Mya Hansen recorded a steal on the defensive possession, giving Boise State a chance to take the lead. However New Mexico forced a jump ball, claiming possession with 8.6 seconds remaining. The Lobos failed to convert and the game went to overtime.
