Makenzie Butt prepares to hit against Indiana

Broncos Split in Texas

2/28/2025 6:50:00 PM | Softball

SAN ANTONIO – Freshman Julianne Rose pitched five innings of one-run ball to earn her first-career victory as Boise State defeated UTSA 8-2, Friday.

The Broncos lost to Houston 9-8 earlier in the day and are 1-1 at the Birds Up Bash.

Boise State (13-4) scored in the top of the first against the tournament host when Sophia Knight walked and came around to scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brooklynn Pettis.

Knight singled in the third in front of Mykenzie Hanna's sixth home run of the season and the Broncos led 3-0.

Freshman Makenzie Butt homered to open the sixth, her second of the day and her team-leading eighth of the season.

UTSA (9-6) scored twice in the sixth, but Boise State put the game away with a four-run seventh. The highlight of the rally was a two-run double by Pettis.

"We got a good start from Julianne (Rose) and our response as a team overall was good," head coach Justin Shults said. "We gave up too many free passes against Houston. We have to find a way to finish games like that."

In the Broncos' tournament opener, Houston scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win in a game that featured four lead changes.

The Cougars (12-4) scored with two outs on a walk, hit by pitch and a pair of singles against Abby Dowell (4-2), the third Bronco pitcher of the game.

Houston jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second. Butt brought Boise State within a run with a three-run home run in the third.

In the fifth, Butt singled in the tying run and Sydney Groves plated two with a single for a 6-4 lead.

The Cougars scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to regain the advantage at 7-6.

In the top of the seventh, Knight doubled and Hanna singled to put runners at the corners. Knight scored the tying run on a wild pitch and Hanna scored the go-ahead tally on a sacrifice fly by Megan Lake.

Boise State concludes round-robin play, Saturday against Le Moyne. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. CT/9:30 a.m. MT.
