Degenhart Scores 22, Broncos Down San Jose State for Fourth Straight Win

BOISE, Idaho — Fueled by Tyson Degenhart's game-high 22 points, Boise State defeated San Jose State, 79-52, on Friday night at ExtraMile Arena.
 
The Broncos (17-7, 9-4 Mountain West) collected their fourth straight win and improved to 11-1 at home this season. San Jose State (12-13, 5-8 Mountain West), who entered Friday's game with a two-game winning streak, dropped to 2-7 on the road.
 
In 32 minutes of game action, Degenhart shot 9-for-11 from the field and knocked down all three of his three-point attempts. He added six rebounds to go along with his 22 points.
 
Alvaro Cardenas recorded 16 points, six rebounds and nine assists, while Emmanuel Ugbo totaled 12 points and five boards. Javan Buchanan totaled 11 points off the bench and notched his sixth-consecutive double-digit scoring effort.
 
San Jose State was led by Latrell Davis, who posted a team-high 14 points and five rebounds. Josh Uduje, the Spartans' leading scorer, shot 3-for-9 and was held to just eight points in the contest.
 
After San Jose State tallied the first two baskets of the game, Boise State responded with six consecutive points and grabbed an early two-point lead at the first media timeout. The Broncos made three of their first five shots from the floor, with three different players cracking the scoring column.
 
Following an early deficit, Boise State evened the score at the 17:37 mark and didn't trail for the remainder of the game. With 3:47 left to play in the opening 20 minutes, Ugbo drained a three-pointer, giving the Broncos their first double digit lead of the night.
 
Six different Broncos scored a basket in the period, with Degenhart and Ugbo pacing all scorers. The duo shot a combined 8-for-10 and tallied 20 of Boise State's 37 first-half points.
 
To conclude the frame, Julian Bowie scored the final four points for the Broncos. Collectively, the team shot 56 percent (15-27 FGs) and led by 12 at the intermission.
 
The second half began with Boise State rattling off six straight points in the first three minutes. Benefiting from an 11-4 start to the period, the Broncos forged ahead by 21.
 
With the game in hand for the entire half, Boise State grabbed its largest lead of the night with 48 ticks remaining in the game. Pearson Carmichael scored on a second-chance layup, resulting in a 27-point advantage for the Blue and Orange.
 
The Broncos shot 54.5 percent from the field and limited San Jose State to 38.0 percent shooting. Boise State outpaced the Spartans in every major category and cruised to 79-52 victory.
 
Following four games in a 10-day stretch, the Broncos will have a week off before their next game. The team hits the road next Friday and will play San Diego State on Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. MT.

The Broncos are 42-4 all time against San Jose State, including 23-0 at home.
 
Boise State defeated the Spartans by 27, signifying the team's 12th double-digit win of the season and eighth by 20 points or more.
 
The Broncos held San Jose State to 52 points, noting the ninth team Boise State has held its opponent to 60 points or fewer in a game this season (most among Mountain West teams).
 
Tyson Degenhart scored a game-high 22 points, marking his 26th career 20-point game (ninth this season).
 
Alvaro Cardenas totaled nine assists, upping his season total to 164. He is one away from tying La'Shard Anderson (165, 2010-11) for the most in a single season in program history.
 
Pearson Carmichael grabbed a career-high six rebounds and tied his career best with three made field goals.
