Broncos Swept by Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. – Boise State opened Mountain West play with a pair of losses to Fresno State, Saturday.

In the opener, the Broncos (19-8, 0-2 MW) were held to six hits in an 8-0 six-inning setback.

The nightcap saw Boise State jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophia Knight led off with a single and stole second.
Â
Quinn Southerland followed with a sacrifice bunt and moved to second on a throwing error that allowed Knight to score. With two outs, Megan Lake plated Southerland with an RBI-single.

Abby Dowell carried a shutout into the fifth when the Bulldogs (15-9, 2-0) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. A wild pitch moved both runners up before the Broncos traded a run for an out in a rundown that cut the lead to 2-1.

Brook Thompson came out of the bullpen and gave up a double to put runners at second and third with one out. The senior then recorded a pair of strikeouts to preserve the lead.

In the sixth, Fresno State scored a pair of runs on three hits and was aided by a Boise State error to register the come-from-behind victory.

The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon PT/1 p.m. MT.

*Sophia Knight extended her hitting streak to 29 and her on-base streak to 41, both school records.
*Hailey Vassalotti made her collegiate debut as a pinch runner in game one…also pinch ran in game two.
