BOISE, Idaho – In the biggest matchup in series history, Boise State powered past Idaho State 8-3, Thursday.
Â
The Broncos (16-5) and Bengals (14-5) both entered the week receiving votes in the NFCA/GoRout Top 25 poll. The combined winning percentage (.763) entering the game marked the highest for a nonconference home game in Boise State history.
Â
Idaho State scored an unearned run in the second and added two in the fourth off Boise State starter Brook Thompson (6-0).
Â
The nation's highest-scoring offense (9.50 runs per game) broke through against Lizzy Tommasini (2-3) in the fourth.
Â
Sydney Groves doubled to open the inning. Megan Lake's ground out advanced pinch runner Ashley Hernandez to third. Hollier Farmer lined out and pinch hitter Skylar Stroh walked to put runners at the corners.
Â
Quinn Southerland and Sophia Knight followed with consecutive-RBI singles to cut the Broncos' deficit to 3-2. Mykenzie Hanna then drilled a three-run, opposite-field home run to give Boise State the lead.
Â
The Broncos added three runs in the fifth when Lake clobbered a two-run home run and Farmer went back-to-back with a line drive over the wall in left for an 8-3 advantage.
Â
Abby Dowell logged 2 1/3 innings in relief and Olivia Bauer recorded two outs as the bullpen combined to blank the Bengals over the last-three innings.
Â
"Idaho State is a good softball team and tonight was a quality win," head coach Justin Shults said. "We did a good job staying in the fight until our offense could get going."
