Broncos Denied by Wolf Pack

SAN DIEGO – Missed opportunities haunted Boise State in an 8-4 loss to Nevada at the 2025 Mountain West Softball Championship, Thursday.

The loss dropped the Broncos (34-21) into the losers' bracket where they will face tournament-host San Diego State at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT, Friday.

Boise State recorded six hits and was issued eight walks by Nevada (41-12) pitching, but stranded 11 baserunners.

In the top of the first, Sophia Knight reached on an error and back-to-back walks to Mykenzie Hanna and Makenzie Butt loaded the bases with zero outs. However, the Broncos failed to score.

In the third, Knight and Hanna singled to open the inning, but again the Broncos were turned away.

Boise State senior Brook Thompson kept the Wolf Pack off the board for 3 1/3 innings, but Nevada scored a pair of runs off reliever Abby Dowell (9-10) in the fourth. Nevada added a run in the fifth after Thompson reentered the circle to lead 3-0.

Brooklynn Pettis led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a single by Leah McAnally. With two outs, pinch hitter Sydney Groves and Chloe Hughes drew consecutive walks to cut the deficit to 3-1. Knight, the nation's leader in hits, grounded out and the Broncos left the bases loaded.

In the home half of the sixth, Nevada scored five runs, two unearned, off reliever Julianne Rose to stretch its lead to 8-1.

Hanna singled to open the seventh and three-straight walks forced in a run. Megan Lake dumped a single into left field to cut the deficit to 8-3.

Hollie Farmer then hit a ground ball to the shortstop and McAnally was called out for interference when she collided with the fielder.

Quinn Southerland's ground out scored a run before a ground out by Hughes ended the game with Knight, the tying run, in the on-deck circle.
