Broncos Open 2026 Gymnastics Season at Southern Utah

WHAT'S NEXT: Boise State Gymnastics opens the 2026 season at Southern Utah, competing against the Flippin' Birds on Friday, Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the America First Event Center.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH: In 2025, Southern Utah won its third-straight league crown and qualified for NCAA Regionals for the 12th-consecutive season. Last year, the Flippin' Birds ranked 21st in the nation with a 196.415 NQS. Head coach Scotty Bauman is entering his 35th year at the helm of the program after being named MPSF Coach of the Year in 2025. SUU was voted 29th in the WCGA Preseason Coaches' Poll.

FAMILIAR FACES: Friday marks the 83rd meeting between the teams, making SUU the Broncos' third-most common opponent behind BYU and Utah State. Boise State holds a 51-31 advantage in the series, including a 34-16 mark under Tina Bird.

FAMILY AFFAIR: For the sixth time in three seasons, Boise State senior Anna Ferguson will compete against her younger sister, Maria, a junior for the Flippin' Birds. Both have seen success in their collegiate careers, with Anna earning MW Specialist of the Week on beam and Maria securing All-MPSF First Team on bars. The pair grew up in Dubai before moving to Las Vegas in 2017. Anna, a dual citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, has represented the country at the PanAmerican Games. FUTURE FOES: Boise State and Southern Utah will be conference foes in 2027, as both are set to compete in the Pac-12. They will be joined by Oregon State and Utah State. This will be the fourth conference the teams have been in together. From 1991-93, 2006-11 and 2013, both teams were in the WAC. The squads were also in the Western Gymnastics Conference from 2002-05 and Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference from 2014-23.

PRESEASON FAVORITES: Boise State was tabbed first in the Mountain West Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning 27 of a possible 30 points and a pair of first-place votes. In two seasons, the Broncos have compiled a 10-1 record in conference meets.

IN THE RANKINGS: Boise State was tabbed 32nd in the WCGA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Last year, the Broncos were 32nd in the final rankings, tallying a 196.115 NQS. They ended the regular season ranked 30th overall and 20th on bars, registering a team NQS of 49.240 on the apparatus.

RING SEASON: One year after winning the inaugural Mountain West Championships, Boise State won the 2025 MW regular season crown. The Broncos boasted the league's highest NQS on bars (49.240), beam (49.080) and floor (49.105) last year.

BIRD BACK WITH THE BRONCOS: Head coach Tina Bird returns for her 19th season at the helm of the Broncos. She served as co-head coach from 2008-19 before becoming the lone head coach in 2020. From 1990-2007, she was an assistant coach for Boise State. Bird was a gymnast at Boise State from 1986-89, holding the school's floor record for four years. In her 36 years on staff, Boise State has produced 34 NCAA Regional appearances, 15 conference titles and 13 All-Americans. Bird has earned the conference coach of the year eight times, including the last two awards in the Mountain West.

ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST RETURNERS: Boise State returns three All-Mountain West selections from last season, led by Co-Freshman of the Year Kristina Shchennikova, who was also a second-team selection on bars. She earned MW Freshman of the Week five times and MW Beam Specialist of the Week three times throughout the 2025 campaign, winning three beam titles during her rookie year. Also coming back for the Broncos are two All-MW floor selections. First-team honoree Blake Pascal returns for her fifth year and second-team honoree Bridget Kemp is back for her sophomore campaign. Pascal has four-career wins on floor with Kemp adding two.
