BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Athletics announced Tyler Whitmer, who previously worked for the Broncos from 2018 to 2025, will return to Boise State as the Associate Athletic Director, Performance and Culture. His first day back is Monday (May 4).
In his new role, Whitmer will oversee all aspects of men's basketball sports performance, and serve as the team's secondary sport administrator. His role will expand beyond sports performance as he will build and lead a strong unified culture across all Boise State athletic programs and work closely with coaches and staff to support athlete and team development. He will also be a member of Boise State's senior staff administrative team.
"I am truly excited and grateful to be returning to Boise State Athletics in a role focused on strengthening culture and supporting professional development for our staff, coaches and student-athletes," said Whitmer. "My family and I are blessed to continue to call Boise State home. I am beyond grateful for Jeramiah Dickey for allowing me the opportunity to come back and invest in people who make this community so special. I look forward to helping foster growth, performance, connection, and continued success across Bronco Athletics. Go Broncos!"
"Whitmer is ELITE and a Bar Raiser, and he's going to elevate our athletic department - just like he did when he was here before," said Jeramiah Dickey, Boise State director of athletics. "He is great at connecting and creating personal and professional growth in individuals and teams, which will impact our 18 sport programs and 350+ student-athletes. He's also great in establishing a strong culture, something Coach Rice and I value and want to see continue to play out with our men's basketball team. We're going to double down on what it means to be a Bronco, and we know Whitmer will play a big role in shaping our present and future success."
"We are so excited to bring back Whitmer and see his impact once again on our basketball program," said Leon Rice, Boise State head men's basketball coach. "Whitmer is such a special person who knows how to get the best out of our guys, on and off the court. He sets a culture that pushes our players to be their very best, and I can't wait to see that once again on our team but the entire athletic department as well."
Previously with the Broncos, Whitmer oversaw sports performance for Olympic sports. He also managed the athlete development for men's basketball and men's tennis and was the sport administrator for men's tennis. With men's basketball, he was the sports performance coach with the team during three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2021 to 2023 and 2021-22 Mountain West championship-winning team. With men's tennis, Whitmer was a part of a staff that helped the team win three conference championships and make three NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to men's basketball, Whitmer worked with Boise State women's basketball and was a part of their three conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances from 2018-20.
Whitmer started at Boise State in January 2018 and worked his way from associate director (2018) to director of sports performance (2018-22) to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance Health and Wellness, Olympic Sports Performance (2022-25).
In addition to Boise State, Whitmer has stops at Oral Roberts (2013-18), MidAmerica Nazarene (2012-13) and Denver (2011). He most recently worked with Teamworks.
Whitmer has a master's degree in exercise physiology from Kansas and a bachelor's degree in sports medicine from Colorado State.
