BOISE STATE TENURE
Andrew Rich is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Boise State softball team. He joined the Bronco family on July 19, 2018 as a member of coach Maggie Huffaker’s inaugural staff. Rich primarily works with Boise State’s defense, while also serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator.
In his first season with the Blue and Orange, Rich helped the team to the 2019 NCAA tournament where the Broncos went 2-2 and reached the regional final against their host, the Florida Gators. On their way to the final the Broncos defeated Stanford twice, which included the program’s first NCAA Championship victory in history.
The team finished the campaign at 36-16 overall and were an at-large selection to the national tournament. Three Broncos, Bradie Fillmore, Kora Wade and Rebekah Cervantes, were named to the NFCA’s Pacific-Region team.
In 2019, Rich’s defensive coaching efforts led to team records in fielding percentage (.963) and fewest errors committed (54). The team’s fielding percentage rose by 14-percent in the span of a year, while Boise State committed 22 fewer errors on the season.
Unfortunately, his second season with the Broncos in 2020 was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Boise State finished its abbreviated season at 14-11 overall and were headed into conference play when the year ended. Three student-athletes, Bradie Fillmore, Karlee Johnson and Alison Seng, received postseason All-MW honors.
BOISE STATE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
As a part of head coach Huffaker’s staff, their accomplishments at Boise State include: one NCAA Regional appearance and one NCAA regional championship appearance; two winning seasons; student-athletes have earned three NFCA All-Region honors, eight All-MW accolades. Academically, her team has earned one NFCA Academic Team Award, nine NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete accolades, 29 Academic All-MW and 20 MW Scholar-Athlete (3.5 or better cumulative GPA) honors.
PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE
Prior to Boise State, Rich spent two seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Sonoma State. While there for the 2017 and 2018 campaigns the program went a combined 65-42 overall and reached the NCAA tournament once. Sonoma State also landed three players on the All-CCAA team in 2018.
Rich moved to Sonoma State after serving as an undergraduate assistant coach and assistant director of operations at Mountain West member Fresno State during the 2016 season. The Bulldogs’ staff would go on to be named the NFCA Pacific Region Coaching Staff of the Year after winning 42 games and defending their conference title.
PERSONAL
Prior to earning his degree in kinesiology from Fresno State, Rich spent five seasons as an assistant coach at the high school level, along with four years at the club level.
