Gavin O’Neal joined the Bronco staff at the start of the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach overseeing the Broncos’ sprints, hurdles, and mid-distance groups, and was named interim head coach March 2024.
During his tenure at Boise State, O’Neal has coached an NCAA champion, 30 NCAA qualifiers, 18 individual Mountain West champions and 23 school records.
In 2022, Kristie Schoffield won the women’s 800-meter race at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, after winning the event at both the Indoor and Outdoor Mountain West Championships. Schoffield was the first woman from a school outside of the Autonomous Five conferences to win the event since 2012. She was tabbed the MW Conference Athlete of the Year, West Regional Athlete of the Year, and was a finalist at USA Outdoor Championships, clocking a conference-record time of 1:59.80.
Under O’Neal’s guidance, MaLeigha Menegatti won the women’s 800m at both the 2023 Indoor and Outdoor Mountain West Championships. Menegatti’s time of 2:03.14 at the indoor meet was a conference record and qualified her for the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships. She earned All-America second-team honors.
At the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Championships, the Broncos also broke the school record in the women’s 4x400m relay, clocking a time of 3:39.16 and winning bronze.
Prior to coming to Boise, O’Neal enjoyed coaching stops at the University of Miami (assistant track & field coach - 2012-13), Columbia University (associate head track & field coach - 2010-12, assistant track & field coach - 2006-10), Williams College (assistant track & field coach and assistant strength & conditioning coach - 2005-06) and Oberlin College (assistant men’s cross country and track & field coach - 1999-2002).
While at Columbia, O’Neal was named the 2010 and 2011 Northeast Regional Coach of the Year while helping the women’s track & field team win the 2012 Ivy League Championship, giving the Lions their first track & field championship in school history.
