Seventy-Yard Run by ‘Mutt’ Stoddard is Highlight of Contest; Visitors Come Close to Scoring
BOISE, Idaho – After being held 7-0 in the first half, the Broncos of Boise Junior College came back fighting mad in the second half Friday night to defeat Gooding College's Bobcats by a score of 20-0.
The game was played under flood lights at Public School Field before a crowd of nearly 1,500 persons.
The Broncos scored once in the opening quarter and twice in the final period, after stopping Gooding thrusts on the 10 and 15-yard lines several times. Highlights of the entire game was a 70-yard run by "Mutt" Stoddard in the final quarter for a touchdown.
Second String Plays
Stoddard and Cantlin did the heavy ball packing for the Broncos, with Bobby Shaw alternating, while Eslinger was the star of the Bobcat offense, twisting and diving through the Bronco line time after time for good gains. Beryessa and Meserole starred for Gooding on defense, smearing many Junior College plays.
Coach Max Eiden raised the fighting spirit of his team by substituting 11 men at a time. Dissatisfied with the work of his starting lineup, Eiden sent in a second string, which scored the second touchdown of the night and twice met a Gooding challenge by holding for downs when a Gooding score seemed inevitable. The seconds fought to keep off the bench and the regulars, when sent back in, did the same.
Intercepts Pass
Coach Parberry of Gooding, however, stayed closely with his starting lineup, making substitutions only when injuries demanded.
The first Bronco score, in the first quarter, came when Kidd intercepted a Gooding pass on his own 45-yard line and returned it to the Gooding 15 before being downed. Shaw skirted right end for seven yards and went to the Gooding five on the next play. Nalley made three through the center of the line and then drove to the half-yard mark. From there Nalley went over right tackle to score. Shaw kicked goal.
As the first half ended Boise was marching to a second score and had reached the Gooding seven-yard stripe after a drive from the Junior College 45.
Threat Nipped
Another Junior College threat was nipped in the third quarter when Hancock, Bobcat quarterback, intercepted a pass from Shaw on the Gooding 13. The Boise advance had been featured by a 30-yard pass, Shaw to Uranga. A short time later Gooding again held for downs on her own 10-yard line. It was then Coach Eiden sent in his second crew.
The new men immediately started a drive that finally netted a score. Anderson and Cantlin, fullback and quarterback, drove at the line after taking a Gooding punt on the Gooding 34. A pass, Cantlin to Carter, put the pigskin on the Gooding 16 as the quarter ended.
Cantlin made a 12-yard run in the first play of the final period. The next plunge netted three more, Anderson made a yard through center and then Cantlin went around right end to score. His kick for point was good and the score was Boise Junior College 14, Gooding College 0.
Gooding Opens Up
Gooding opened up then, with Eslinger making spectacular gains, and twice the Broncos had to tighten and hold in the shadow of their own goal posts.
After the seconds had pulled themselves from danger, the first string game back, rearin' for action. Nalley hit center for two yards, then Stoddard broke away around right end, following the boundary line and skipped 70 yards for a touchdown. The kick that followed was wide, and the score stood 20 to 0.
The Broncos next tried a short kick and recovered it on the Gooding 40 but the play was called back. After play resumed a series of intercepted passes and Boise had the ball in midfield as the game ended.
Gooding made no first downs in the first half but chalked up six in the second. The Broncos made 14 first downs during the game.
