Broncos Shutout By No. 12/10 UCLA

Feb. 15, 2015

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Boise State's weekend at the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas came to an end Sunday with a 6-0 loss to No. 12/10 UCLA.

The Broncos (4-6) return to action next weekend for five games at the Diamond Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Boise State opens action Friday (Feb. 20) against No. 13/12 Minnesota at 1:30 p.m. MT and No. 21/21 Arizona State at 6 p.m. MT.

UCLA pitcher Ally Carda went the distance, allowing no hits and two walks to the Broncos. It marked just the second time since the start of the 2014 season that Boise State had been no-hit, with the previous time coming Feb. 23, 2014 in a 4-0, six-inning loss to Nebraska.

Makenna Weir and ShaeLee Pearson drew the walks for the Broncos Sunday, while freshman Rachel Rodriguez took her second loss of the campaign, allowing six runs (five earned) on 12 hits with three strikeouts.

After a scoreless opening inning, UCLA (9-2) scored twice in its half of the second starting with an RBI double from Kylee Perez that brought Tara Mueller home. Two batters later, Allexis Bennett would single to center, plating Perez with the second run.

Weir would make a fine defensive play to end UCLA's second. With runners at second and third and one out, Weir snagged Carda's low line drive and tagged third to double off Gracie Goulder.

Boise State's best scoring threat came in the third inning, as Weir walked and stole second with one out. But Jordan Kreiger would go down on strikes, and, with Teauna Hughes up, Weir would get hung up between second and third on a ball in the dirt to end the inning.

Delaney Spaulding and Gabrielle Maurice led off the Bruin third with doubles, Spaulding coming home on the latter. Maurice would follow on the ensuing at-bat on Brittany Moeai's single up the middle.

The Bruins added runs in the fourth and fifth, with Bennett scoring the former on an error by freshman ShaeLee Pearson, then knocking in the latter with an RBI triple that brought in Robyn Corruth.
