UP NOW: Boise State (11-2-1, 5-0-1) will embark on its final regular season road trip of the season this coming weekend with games at Air Force (Friday, Oct. 12) and Colorado College (Sunday, Oct. 14).
The Broncos (16 points) remain atop the Mountain West standings and are just one point ahead of second-place San Jose State (6-5-2, 5-1-0). After the top-two teams, there is a three-way tie for third place at 10 points with Colorado College, New Mexico and Wyoming occupying the three spots.
LAST TIME OUT: Boise State was able to come away with four valuable road points this past weekend thanks to a 2-2 draw against New Mexico and a 1-0 victory over San Diego State. Raimee Sherle broke the Mountain West record for career goals (42) in the second minute against the Lobos, as she found the back of the net just one minute and three seconds into the game. Aubree Chatterton made it a two-goal lead for the Broncos in the 17th minute, but New Mexico was able to answer with two goals to push the game into overtime. Neither side could capitalize in the first or second overtimes, resulting in Boise State's first draw of the season.
Sunday's tilt with San Diego State was an evenly-matched game with the difference maker coming on a Bronco corner kick in the 52nd minute. Freshman Macie Nelson used her height to control the ball and finished the play with a poke to give Boise State the 1-0 lead. The clean sheet against SDSU was the seventh of the season for goalkeeper Tara Fisher, putting her in second place in single-season school history for shutouts.
ABOUT AIR FORCE: The Falcons (1-5-6, 0-3-3) have struggled to score so far this season, but boast an exceptional defense with a 0.98 goals-against average that is sixth in the conference. Goalkeeper Jennifer Hiddink has made 71 saves in 2018 – second most in the Mountain West.
ABOUT COLORADO COLLEGE: The Tigers (7-4-1, 3-2-1) have been well rounded through 12 games, sporting a 0.87 GAA (second in the MW) while also averaging 1.25 goals per game (fifth in the MW). Midfielder Lauren Milliet leads the Colorado College attack, as the senior has four assists and four goals (12 points) so far in 2018.
CONTEXT ON LAST WEEKEND: With San Diego State being the defending Mountain West Tournament Champions and New Mexico having joined them in the conference final last season, last weekend's road trip was projected to be the Broncos' toughest in the MW season. The Broncos stepped up and earned four points, marking the first time in program history that the team picked up four points in a weekend against the travel partners (Aztecs and Lobos) whether it be home or away since the 2011 season.
NO. 42: Sherle officially broke the Mountain West record against the Lobos, as the junior scored the 42nd goal of her career at the 1:03 mark to surpass Utah's Amy Kofoed (1999-2001) and her 41 goals. Sherle also tied the Boise State program record for career points (92) with the goal, joining Shannon Saxton (92 points, 2007-10).
11-WIN CLUB: There are only 18 teams in the NCAA who have won 11 games through Oct. 10, and the Broncos became one of those teams after last Sunday's 1-0 win against the Aztecs. The Blue and Orange are just two wins away from tying the program record for most wins in a season (13), which was achieved in 2009, 2013 and 2017.
COMBINING OFFENSE AND DEFENSE: The Broncos' success so far this season can be attributed to its balance on both offense and defense. Boise State is first in the Mountain West and No. 49 in the NCAA with a 2.00 scoring offense average, while also sporting a 0.903 goals-against average that is fourth in the league and No. 76 in the NCAA.
WINNING IN A DIFFERENT WAY: Sunday's win against the Aztecs was unique in that it was just the second Bronco win this season without a goal from Sherle. Furthermore, the goal from Macie Nelson in the 52nd came off a corner kick from Eva Herrera, marking the team's first goal off a corner kick this season.
MW REGULAR SEASON STREAK: Dating back to last season, Boise State has been able to string together a 13-game MW regular season unbeaten streak. The Blue and Orange have been outstanding against conference opponents as of late, outscoring MW opponents 13-4 so far in 2018.
