WHAT IS HAPPENING

  • A new era in Boise State swimming & diving begins this weekend when the Broncos head north with their new head coach Christine Mabile. 
  • The Blue and Orange opens the 2018-19 campaign on the road with a pair of meets at instate-rival Idaho on Saturday followed by one at Washington State on Sunday. 
  • The Broncos have not lost a season opener in nine years dating back to the 2009 campaign when they defeated San Jose State 130-112 at the WAC Shootout in San Jose, Calif. 

PREVIEW: IDAHO VANDALS

  • Boise State takes on the Idaho Vandals this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (Mountain) at Moscow in the UI Swim Center. 
  • This will be the season opener for both programs.
  • Saturday's encounter will be the 18th meeting all-time between the two programs with the Broncos leading the series 13-4 (10-2 in duals, 3-2 at invites/championships), including and active 13-meet win streak. 
  • Boise State defeated Idaho 167-112 last year in Boise.

PREVIEW: WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS

  • Boise State will conclude the weekend at Pullman, Wash., where the swim team will take on the Pacific-12 Conference's Washington State Cougars at 11 a.m. (MT).
  • The Cougars are coming off a 129-122 road victory over San Diego on Sept. 22 in their lone meet to date. 
  • This will be the sixth meeting all-time between Boise State and Washington State in a series the Broncos lead 3-2 (2-2 in duals, 1-0 in invites/championships), the Blue and Orange has won three straight over the Cougars.
  • Sunday's encounter will be the first meeting between the two programs since they met at the Hawkeye Invitational in December of 2012 with Boise State winning 742.5 to 387.5 in the invite's overall point standings.

THE MABILE ERA BEGINS

  • This season marks the first under Boise State's new head coach Christine Mabile who leads her team north this weekend for their first competition under her leadership.
  • Mabile is an alum of Boise State graduating in 2010 ... while at Boise State she was a volunteer assistant coach working with the team from the deck for four years.  
  • Mabile returned to Boise State after two years as an assistant at Missouri, preceded by five years as head coach at the College of Idaho.
  • Joining Mabile on her first coaching staff are Jordan Lieberman who was an assistant at Cornell, as well as Brandon Blaisdell who returns for his fourth season as the Broncos diving coach. 

CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION

  • Boise State's swimming and diving program has built a championship tradition in its 12-year existence. 
  • Since its founding for the 2006-07 school year the Broncos have won six conference championships, including back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. 
  • The first two titles came in 2010 and 2011 as members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
  • Boise State's longest streak of conference championships won has been three, capped off by the 2012 Mountain West title in the Broncos first year of membership.
  • Since joining the MW for the 2011-12 campaign, Boise State has won four of seven titles bringing home the hardware in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2018.  
  • In all, the Broncos have won a conference championship six times in the last nine years. 

WIN STREAKS

  • Boise State has not lost a home dual in nine years dating back to Feb. 7, 2009 when they lost at the hands of Oregon State in the program's third season.
  • The Broncos victory over Wyoming in the home finale last year on Jan. 20, 2018 extended their home win streak in team duals to 23 straight, 2-0 in the 2017-18 season.
  • Boise State has an active overall win streak of 10-consecutive victories, 4-0 in 2017-18, in dual meets dating back to Jan. 6, 2017 when the Broncos fell at UCLA.

STRONG SENIOR CLASS

  • Boise State will be led in 2018-19 by a strong senior class who has claimed two Mountain West Championships and placed second once during their freshmen campaign. 
  • The seven-member class includes: Mandy Barnes, Anne Boodt, Cassidy Bose, Cody Evans, Ally Kleinsorgen, Abbey Sorensen and Laura Williams. 
  • Combined the class has two conference team championships, three conference individual and 10 relay titles, 44 All-Mountain West honors, 21 Academic All-MW and 17 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honors, as well as 10 CSCAA Scholar All-American honors. 
  • Sorensen returns as the defending Mountain West champion in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke.
  • Kleinsorgen, Sorensen, Evans and Williams also made up 10 of the 16 positions in the Broncos four MW relay championships teams from 2018 in the 200 and four freestyle relays, as well as the 200 and 400 medley relays. 

SEVEN MEMBER JUNIOR CLASS

  • In addition to the seven seniors, Boise State returns a talented and experience squad of juniors which played an instrumental role in the Broncos claiming their second-consecutive Mountain West team championship in 2018.
  • The juniors include: Emmie Jennings, Jamie Nats, Robin Pinger, Alyssa Schultz and Georgia Zacest. 
  • Together they have accounted for seven positions on five conference relay championship teams, 16 All-MW honors, 10 Academic All-MW and nine MW Scholar-Athlete honors, and two CSCAA Scholar All-American awards.
  • Pinger and Jennings accounted for six of the 16 positions on Boise State's four MW relay championships in 2018. 

TEN MEMBER SOPHOMORE CLASS

  • The 10-member sophomore class includes: Cassie Barkhorn, Taylor Clark, Lucia Davis, Madison Frederick, Hayley Hill, Molly Hogg, Lauren Sale, Emma Segneri, Tatum Thompkins  and Brittany Wen.
  • Together they have six All-MW honors, nine Academic All-MW and eight MW Scholar-Athlete honors, as well as three CSCAA Scholar All-American honors.
  • Davis and Hill recorded two individual All-MW honors each, while Frederick and Hill earned All-MW in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 2018.
  • Hill also returns as the CSCAA National Invitational champion and record holder in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:29.26 (fourth fastest in Boise State history) at the 2018 championship meet last March. 

THE NEWEST CLASS, SIX FRESHMEN

  • The Broncos added six talented freshmen this fall, five swimmers and one diver. 
  • Marti Erlam is the lone diver of the class and comes to Boise State from Calgary, Alberta, where she was a Canadian Nationals finalist in both junior and senior competitions on the springboard.
  • Katie McCoy from Phoenix, Ariz., is one of five swimmers, she is a two-time Arizona State champion in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke.
  • Kailee Nabeta is from Carmichael, Calif., where she placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle at the state championships. 
  • Madesyn Ronquillio comes from Tracy, Calif., where she placed 13th at the California State Championships in the 100-yard backstroke.
  • Ariane Skeggs, a native of Australia but comes to Boise State via Bakersfield, Calif., she placed third in the 500 free at the CIF-Central Section Division I Championships.
  • Lauren Vitort is the sixth member of the class and comes to Boise from Riverside, Calif., where she placed fifth in the 200 free and eighth in the 500 free at the 2017 California State Meet.

SIX BRONCOS RANKED IN TOP TEN AT BOISE STATE

  • Entering the 2018-19 campaign six veterans of the team are ranked in the top-10 at Boise State in various races.
  • Ally Kleinsorgen currently has times among the top-10 in three races ... she has three times ranked in the 50 backstroke with the best coming in at third with a of 24.52 as the lead-off leg of the 200 medley relay in last year's MW championship victory ...  she also has the fourth-best time in the 100 back with a 52.90 accomplished in the lead-off leg of the 400 medley relay at the Art Adamson Invite in 2017, she also has the 10th-fastest time for 100 back ... the final race she is ranked in is the 200 back where she owns the sixth (1:56.18) and eighth (1:56.59) place times.
  • Abbey Sorensen is ranked in the top-10 for two races ... she has four of the top-10 times for the 200 backstroke with the top time ranked second at 1:54.53 accomplished in the 2018 MW preliminary races, her second-fastest time of 1:54.60 won her the 2018 MW Championship ... she also owns the 10th-ranked time for the 50 free with a career-best time of 22.37 swam as a member of the MW Championship 200 freestyle relay team in 2018.
  • Hayley Hill is ranked in two races as well ... she owns the 10th-ranked time for the 500 free at 4:45.30 swam at last year's CSCAA National Invitational ... she also has the fourth-ranked time in the 1,650 free of 16:29.26 which won the championship and set the meet record at the 2018 CSCAA National Invitational at Annapolis, Md.
  • Lucia Davis is also ranked in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:36.57 accomplished at the 2018 MW Championships and is good for sixth place in Bronco history. 
  • Alyssa Schultz has the ninth-ranked time for the 1,650 free of 16:38.71 recorded at last year's MW Championships. 
  • Cassidy Bose, a senior diver, owns the fifth and seventh ranked scores on the platform dive tallying a 254.70 (fifth) at the 2016 MW Championships and a 248.75 (seventh) at the 2017 Art Adamson Invitational.
