BOISE, Idaho -Â The Boise State football team (4-2, 2-1 MW) will host Colorado State (3-4, 2-1) in the Broncos' first non-Saturday game of the season, Friday (Oct. 19).
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be nationally televised by ESPN2. The Broncos will be hosting Orange Friday, and all fans in all sections are encouraged to wear orange.
SPREADING IT AROUND: Boise State has had 11 different offensive players score a touchdown in 2018, a mark that ranks tied for ninth nationally. Ohio State leads the country with 14 different players. Including Tyler Horton's three defensive touchdowns, the Broncos have 12 players that have found the end zone, tied for 12th nationally. Ohio State and Miami, each with 17, lead the country in total players with TDs.
NON-SATURDAY GAMES: Boise State is playing its first non-Saturday game of the season, ending an unheard-of streak (for the Broncos) of 15-consecutive Saturday contests. The streak of Saturday games is the longest since before the Broncos played the first non-Saturday game in school history, a 35-30 victory on the road over eighth-ranked Fresno State, Oct. 19, 2001. Boise State is 55-17 all-time in non-Saturday games, including a mark of 47-11 during the regular season. On Fridays, Boise State is 30-11 all-time, including a mark of 30-9 during the regular season.
RARE WIN WHEN LOSING THE TURNOVER BATTLE: Boise State picked up the 31-27 win at Nevada on Oct. 13 despite losing the turnover battle, 4-3. The Broncos lost three interceptions and a fumble to the Wolf Pack, but still managed the win thanks in part to the defense forcing and recovering a Nevada fumble inside the Bronco five in the first quarter, and Tyler Horton's 99-yard pick-six in the second quarter.
Boise State's last victory when losing the turnover battle came in a 42-25 win over UNLV at Albertsons Stadium on Nov. 18, 2016. In fact, the Broncos went 5-2 in 2016 in games in which they lost the turnover battle.
MAMA, THERE GOES THAT MAN: Senior cornerback Tyler Horton continued to show off his uncanny nose for the ball Oct. 13 in Reno, nabbing an interception and returning it 99 yards for a touchdown. The 99-yard pick-six was not only tied for the second-longest in Boise State history (Tasi Autele, at Montana on Oct. 2, 1993), but was also Horton's third defensive touchdown this season, a Boise State record. Horton has now scored five defensive touchdowns in his career, two on interceptions and three on fumble returns.
Â
A statistic that will be unsurprising to those that remember the final play of the 2017 instant classic between Boise State and Colorado State - senior cornerback Tyler Horton is tied for the national lead in fumble recoveries. He has three in 2018, including two returned for touchdowns (both against Troy, which earned him Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week and Mountain West Player of the Week honors). Horton also recovered the game-ending fumble forced by Leighton Vander Esch in overtime against the Rams last season.
Fellow cornerback Jalen Walker also has a pair of fumble recoveries, ranking tied for eighth nationally in the statistical category.
COMING THROUGH IN TOUGH SPOTS: Boise State's defense has found itself with tall tasks the past two games, coming on the field with an opponent beginning a drive in Bronco territory, and answered resoundingly.
Oct. 6 against San Diego State, the Aztecs, after Bronco turnovers, began three drives inside the Bronco 31. Boise State's defense responded by limiting the Aztecs to two field goals, a touchdown, and just two first downs on those drives.
Oct. 13 in Reno, the Bronco defense forced and recovered a Nevada fumble inside the 10-yard line in the first quarter, preventing the Wolf Pack from taking a two-score lead. Then, after the Wolf Pack opened a drive on the Bronco 29 following an interception, the defense came through again, as Tyler Horton picked off a pass at the Bronco 1 and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown, turning a 10-7 deficit into a 14-10 Boise State lead.
JOHN HIGHTOWER? MORE LIKE JOHN HIGHLIGHT REEL!: Junior wide receiver John Hightower did it again Oct. 13 at Nevada, providing yet another highlight-reel play as he ripped off an 88-yard touchdown run on the first play of Boise State's second possession. Hightower's dash tied the Boise State record for longest run from scrimmage, matching Jeremy McNichols' 88-yard jaunt at San Jose State on Nov. 27, 2015. For the game, Hightower finished with two carries for 90 yards, and caught three passes for 22 yards.
Just add it to the film for Hightower, who has burst onto the scene as a dual running-receiving threat in 2018. Through six games, the Landover, Md., native has rushed eight times for 163 yards (20.4 ypc) and two scores, and caught 21 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns.
