BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State football team travels to Reno, Nev., this week for a match-up with long-time rival Nevada. The Broncos (3-2, 1-1 MW) and Wolf Pack (3-3, 1-1) are slated to kick at 8:30 p.m. at Mackay Stadium, and the game will be nationally televised by CBS Sports Network.
Boise State has previously played Nevada 42 times, more than any other opponent in school history. Idaho, whom the Broncos have played 40 times, is second on the list.
TWO EARLY LOSSES LEAD TO A HAPPY ENDING?: For the fourth time in the last six seasons (2013, 2014, 2017, 2018), Boise State sits at 3-2 through the first five games. While not ideal, a 3-2 start has, of late, been a sign of strong finishes for the Broncos.
Although the Broncos lost their bowl game and finished 8-5 in Chris Petersen's final year at the helm in 2013, Boise State has bounced back emphatically from 3-2 starts under Bryan Harsin (2014-present). In 2014, the Broncos won 10-straight games after the 28-14 loss to Air Force dropped them to 3-2, a run that included a Mountain West Championship Game victory and a VIZIO Fiesta Bowl win.
Last season, the Broncos sat at 3-2 after a humbling 42-23 loss to Virginia at Albertsons Stadium. Again, the team responded, reeling off six-straight wins to clinch the Mountain Division. Then, following a loss at Fresno State in the regular-season finale, the Broncos rebounded to beat the Bulldogs in the Mountain West title game followed by a 38-28 win over Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl.
SPREADING IT AROUND: Boise State has had 11 different offensive players score a touchdown in 2018, a mark that ranks tied for ninth nationally. Ohio State leads the country with 14 different players. Including Tyler Horton's fumble returns for touchdowns, the Broncos have 12 players that have found the end zone, tied for 11th nationally.
OCTOBER GAMES OUT WEST: Boise State has won 10-straight October games played in the Pacific Time Zone, with the last loss coming against Washington State (42-35), Oct. 7, 2000, in Pullman, Wash.
QUICK WORK ON OPENING DRIVES: Oct. 6 against San Diego State, Boise State's defense forced a game-opening drive 3-and-out for the fifth-straight game to open the season. Over those first five games and their respective opening drives, here's the total number of yards for each opponent (in order: Troy, Connecticut, Oklahoma State, Wyoming, San Diego State): 5, 4, 1, 7, 2.
SACK ATTACK: A game after registering a season-high five sacks at Wyoming, Boise State came up just one shy Oct. 6 against San Diego State. Against the Aztecs, senior defensive end Durrant Miles recorded his team-best fourth sack of the season, followed by redshirt sophomore STUD Curtis Weaver picking up his third, and Matt Locher and Riley Whimpey each notching their first sacks of the campaign. Through Oct. 6, the Broncos rank fifth in the FBS and lead the Mountain West with 3.60 sacks per game (18 total). Miles leads the Broncos with 4.0, with Weaver and fellow STUD Jabril Frazier at 3.0 apiece.
HORTON RETURNS TO ACTION AND TO THE TURNOVER THRONE: Senior cornerback Tyler Horton returned to action Oct. 6 against San Diego State after missing the previous two games, and immediately proved why he is a valuable piece of the Bronco defense. Horton recorded a team-high eight tackles (five solo) in the contest, broke up a deep pass, and recovered his FBS-leading third fumble of the season, returning it 10 yards and stopping an Aztec drive into Bronco territory. The fumble recovery put Horton onto the Turnover Throne for a team-best third occasion this season, as all three of his takeaways have been on fumble recoveries.
AMONG THE NATION'S TOP DEFENSES: Boise State's defense posted another strong effort Oct. 6 against San Diego State, limiting the Aztecs to just 267 yards of total offense, and holding them to 12 points over three drives that started in Bronco territory due to turnovers. It marked the third time in five games this season that the Bronco defense has held its opponent to under 300 yards of total offense (193 for Connecticut on Sept. 8, 295 for Wyoming on Sept. 29). With that effort, the Bronco defense rose 11 spots to 15th in the country and tops in the Mountain West in total defense, yielding just 311.2 yards per game.
