Boise State Sweeps CSUN

Broncos get back into the win column with the win as they improve to 7-2 overall.

BOISE, Idaho (9/14/2018) -
Sabryn Roberts and Janell Walley combined for 20 kills and six blocks to lead Boise State back into the win column with a sweep of CSU Northridge Friday afternoon in the third match of the Boise State Classic at Bronco Gym. Boise State saw its balanced offensive attack return against CSUN Friday as four Broncos recorded between eight and 10 kills apiece, while the team hit a season-high 35.6 percent against the Matadors.

"I thought the girls played really well," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "We passed well. We got more people involved in our offense. We're going to be more successful on offense if we get a lot of hitters going."

"We really wanted to focus on good control on our side of the net," commented Garus. "If we win the serve and pass well we're going to set our hitters and blockers up for success. We knew this afternoon's match was not going to be as big of a crowd so we wanted to come out and play hard and play well to win the crowd back and gain some momentum heading into tonight's match."

The win improves Boise State to 7-2 overall with a match tonight against undefeated Portland at 7:30 p.m., followed by the tournament finale Saturday against Sacramento State at noon.

Joining Roberts and Walley offensively were Morgan Hughes who had eight kills, a service ace, six digs and team-high six blocks; while Kiley Lewis matched Hughes' kill total and had four blocks. Hughes hit a team-high 61.5 percent, followed by Walley at 47.4 percent and Lewis at 36.4 percent.

"I think to come back from a loss against a ranked team (No. 13 Washington) with as much energy as we did was pretty awesome," said Morgan Hughes. "We're going to bring it for our games this weekend. We just kind of kept each other calm and made sure that we were ready to come out with a bang after a loss."

Jessica Donahue contributed five kills and four blocks. Freshman Danielle Boss played at setter where she dished out a team-high 33 assists to go with two kills, two service aces, four digs and one block. Jessie Brigham, a freshman from Sisters, Ore., collected a team-high 12 digs.

Boise State's Mountain West leading defense held CSUN to 10.5 percent hitting as a team and recorded 11 blocks against the Matadors compared to four for the visitors against the Broncos.

Set two saw Boise State break up a 5-5 tie with a 6-1 run to seize momentum up 11-6. The Blue and Orange — who hit a match-high 40 percent in the period — was never really threatened after that as the Broncos led by as many as eight points on two occasions, including the final score of 25-17.
