Cedar City, Utah - The No. 7 Boise State gymnastics team (2-0) made a major comeback to defeat Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference foe Southern Utah (1-1), 195.400-194.325 on Friday night at America First Event Center in Cedar City, Utah. The Blue and Orange was trailing Southern Utah until the final rotation, in which they had a phenomenal showing on beam to earn the win.
"We learned a lot from our performance tonight," Co-head coach Tina Bird said. "We'll get back in the gym and work it out for next week."
The Broncos were on bars for the first rotation. Both Tatum Bruden and Shani Remme had uncharacteristic falls, but freshman Alexis Stokes shone in her first collegiate road contest, scoring a team-leading 9.800, good enough for second place on the event. The Thunderbirds had a strong performance on vault, with both Morgan Alfaro and Stephanie Tervort earning 9.800s.
Going into the second rotation, Boise State trailed Southern Utah 48.350-48.850. The Broncos' second event was vault, where they put together 48.900 as a team. Sarah Means was crowned vault champion with a score of 9.875, and Remme bounced back from a tough bars routine to score a 9.800. However, it wasn't enough as the Thunderbirds had another phenomenal showing on bars, also scoring a 48.900 as a team. Through the first two rotations, no Southern Utah gymnast had score below 9.725.
At the halfway point, the Broncos were still behind 97.250-97.725. Remme continued her upward swing with a 9.850 on floor, which gave her a share of the event title. Courtney McGregor, who had been strong all night, followed closely behind with a 9.800. The next three spots were all held by Boise State gymnasts; Bruden, Means, and Isabella Amado all notched marks of 9.750. After the third rotation, the Blue and Orange still trailed 146.150-146.675. The Thunderbirds had a relatively strong beam rotation with only one fault, but the Broncos began to close in.
It all came together for the Broncos on beam. Remme had a nearly flawless routine and finished off strong with a 9.900, giving her the event title. Means and Southern Utah's Hannah Nipp tied for second scores of 9.875. Alex Esmerian and McGregor followed closely behind with a 9.850 and a 9.825. McGregor went on to take the All-Around victory with a 39.150. Their team beam score of 49.250 was enough to take the victory, besting Southern Utah's 47.650 after multiple falls on floor.
"I'm so proud of the beam team!" Bird said. "They attacked and are showing that they are a force to be reckoned with."
The Thunderbirds will come to Boise next Friday, Jan. 25 for round two of this MRGC matchup at 7pm in Taco Bell Arena.
