The women's team of Alexis Fuller, MaLeigha Menegatti, Allie Ostrander and Kristie Schoffield took second at the UW Invitational in 10:56.42
SEATTLE, Wash. -- The quartet of Alexis Fuller, MaLeigha Menegatti, Allie Ostrander and Kristie Schoffield kicked off the weekend with a school record performance, taking second in the distance medley relay in 10:56.42, Friday night at the UW Invitational.
The time breaks the previous school record of 10:58.93 set last season at the NCAA National Championships. Additionally the first four teams eclipsed the previous meet record of 11:02.15.
Fuller ran the opening 1200m leg of the relay for the Broncos, and she handed the baton off to Menegatti in the lead thanks to a strong kick in the final curve. The freshman kept pace with the rest of the field to keep the Broncos in contention entering Schoffield's 800m leg.
Schoffield got the baton to Ostrander in third place, but only a handful of meters off the front pack of Washington and Oklahoma State. Ostrander showed the same poise that has netted her two NCAA individual titles, biding her time until the home stretch of the penultimate lap. Entering the final lap, the Broncos were tight with a pack of Oklahoma State, Washington and BYU, with Ostrander on the outside shoulder. Entering the final stretch, Oklahoma State pulled ahead by roughly five meters, but Ostrander battled to the line to lean ahead of BYU to hold onto second place.
The Broncos finished only 49-hundreths of a second back of the Cowgirls.
"The women had a great run tonight," head coach Corey Ihmels said. "They battled in a really tough field and never stopped fighting. Tonight's performance is going to help us get where we want to be at the end of the season."
The Bronco men also put together a solid performance, finishing fourth in their heat in 10:08.33. Their time put them ninth overall in the field.
Leif Everson ran a strong opening leg to hand off the baton to Jacob Grinwis with Boise State at the front of the pack. Grinwis and Tom Richardson kept the Broncos in contention before Lammi Kalil handled the anchor leg. The freshman battled a high-pressure situation to finish in fourth.
Boise State will continue a busy weekend tomorrow with the continuation of the UW Invitational. A second contingent of Broncos will also be competing at the New Mexico Collegiate Team Invite, in Albuquerque, N.M.
