Broncos-Aggies Showdown Saturday
11/18/2019 4:10:00 PM | Football
BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State football team, ranked Nos. 19 and 20 in the Coaches and Associated Press Polls, respectively, will travel to Logan, Utah, to square off against Utah State in the first of back-to-back road games to close out the regular season. The Broncos and Aggies are slated to kick at 8:30 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 23) at Maverik Stadium, and the game will be nationally televised by CBS Sports Network.
The Broncos will then travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to meet up with Colorado State in the regular-season finale. Boise State is the only school in the Mountain West to close the 2019 regular season with a pair of road games, and the Broncos haven't closed a regular season with consecutive road games since 1991.
POSTSEASON SCENARIOS
Boise State's path to the Mountain West Championship Game is simple – if the Broncos defeat the Aggies, Boise State will host the winner of San Diego State-Hawai'i on The Blue, Dec. 7. If the Broncos drop Saturday's game against Utah State, there is still a possibility that the championship game is held in Boise, but the Broncos would need some help.
THE SERIES
Boise State is 18-5 all-time against Utah State, a rivalry that spans three conferences – the Big West, the WAC and now the Mountain West. The Broncos have won 15 of the last 16 games, the only loss during that stretch coming on the road in 2015 (Oct. 16; 52-26). The Broncos are 8-3 when playing in Logan, and won the last meeting at Maverik Stadium, 41-14, in 2017.
This will be the ninth time Boise State has been ranked headed into its contest with Utah State, and the Broncos are a perfect 8-0 in the previous meetings.
WINNING CONSISTENTLY
With its overtime victory over Wyoming, Boise State cemented its 22nd-consecutive season with a winning record, the longest active streak in the nation, the 15th-longest streak in NCAA history and the longest by a Group of Five school all-time. Notre Dame (42; 1887-1932) owns the longest streak in NCAA history, and Boise State entered the 2019 season tied with Ohio State (1967-87), Penn State (1967-87), Washington (1977-97) and USC (1962-82).
RED ZONE SCORING
Boise State ranks just 40th nationally in red zone offense (.881), but the Broncos have been successful in each of their last 16 trips to the red zone, including 12 touchdowns and four field goals.
LOSE THE (TURNOVER) BATTLE, WIN THE GAME
Generally, the mantra goes, "If you win the turnover battle, you win the game." That has been true for the Broncos in 2019, as Boise State is 2-0 when winning the turnover battle. But the opposite has also been true – Boise State is 7-1 when failing to win the turnover battle. The Broncos are 4-0 when equal in turnovers, and 3-1 when losing the margin.
RUNNING THE MOUNTAIN DIVISION
Nov. 16's 42-9 win over New Mexico was Boise State's 13th-straight win against a Mountain Division opponent, and ran the Broncos' home winning streak against division foes to 10. The Broncos' last loss to a Mountain Division team was a 27-20 loss at Air Force on Nov. 25, 2016.
