Broncos Sweep Distance Medley Relays to Open Weekend

2/21/2019 6:14:00 PM | Track & Field

First sweep of the event in the Mountain West since 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Boise State track and field teams opened the 2019 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships with a dominant showing, sweeping both the men's and women's distance medley relays, Thursday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The men opened with a 9:51.89 performance for the program's first Mountain West title in the event on the men's side, while the women won their fourth-straight title in the event, running 11:10.43.

"I thought both the men and women did a great job of running a team race," head coach Corey Ihmels said. "They remained poised throughout and built off each other on each leg. This was a great way for us to start the weekend."

Andrew Rafla ran the opening 1200m leg of the distance medley for the men, handing off the baton to Brayden Durfee in second, less than 10 meters behind first-place New Mexico. Durfee got the baton to Henry Mong for the 800m with the Broncos neck-in-neck with Utah State.

Mong was able to move ahead of the Aggies on his leg, giving Addison Dehaven a five-meter lead over Utah State. New Mexico had put a 30-meter gap on the field, and it looked like the Broncos would be racing for second.

The redshirt senior remained patient throughout the race, and was able to pass a fading New Mexico entering the bell lap. Dehaven turned on the jets entering the final curve to withstand a late rally from Colorado State and Air Force. The win is the first conference title for the men in the event since the team of Ryan Puckett, Carl Ayers, Cormac Smith and Josh Danielson won the 1996 Big Sky conference title. The time of 9:51.89 also puts the quartet fourth on the school record book.

In the women's race, New Mexico's Weini Kelati pulled away from Alexis Fuller with 600 meters to go on the opening 1200m leg. Fuller got the baton to Kelly Moodry with Boise State still in contention, but racing from behind. Moodry and Krisite Schoffield would methodically move up on their legs, before Schoffield was able to give Allie Ostrander a five-meter lead at the final exchange.

For the second-straight year, Ostrander had a substantial lead on New Mexico's Ednah Kurgat in the event. The redshirt junior was easily able to add to her lead on Kurgat, eventually winning the race by 19 seconds.

This is the first time any Mountain West team has swept both the men's and women's distance medley relay since Air Force accomplished the feat in 2012. The wins put both the men and women at the top of the team leaderboard at the end of day one, with 10 points apiece.

The conference championships are scheduled to continue tomorrow with field events beginning at 12:30 p.m. MT. Running events are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
