Broncos improve to 9-2 on the season
PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Boise State softball team extended their win streak to eight games with a sweep of Michigan State and Yale, Saturday at the GCU Purple Classic.
The eight game winning streak is the longest since the Broncos closed the 2018 season with eight-straight victories.
At 9-2 on the season, Boise State has matched the 2017 squad for the best 10-game start to a season in program history. Team IX opened the season with an 8-2 record, a mark that was matched by Team XI with the victory over Michigan State in the morning.
"This was a great day for our entire team," head coach Maggie Livreri. "We got great contributions for a lot of different faces today, and we really supported one another."
The Broncos will conclude the weekend with an 11 a.m. MT tilt against Grand Canyon, the tournament host.
MICHIGAN STATE RECAP
Boise State opened Saturday with a dominant 9-1 victory over Michigan State (3-8) in five innings.Â
The bats were rocking, as the Broncos registered a season-high 14 hits on the game. Boise State had seven different players bat in a run on the day, while Bradie Fillmore was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.Â
Alison Seng and Rebekah Cervantes went 2-for-3, while Kora Wade ended the game 3-for-4.Â
The victory is also the seventh all-time win over a Big Ten team in program history.Â
It took little time for the Broncos to take control in the game, jumping to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With Jessica McKay and Fillmore on base, Seng singled up the middle to bring both runs in. On the next at-bat, Ashlyn Adams ripped a single along the left field line to bat in Seng from second.
Boise State extended their lead to 5-0 in the second inning with a pair of runs, thanks to RBI singles from both McKay and Fillmore.Â
Michigan State would add their lone run of the game on a solo home run with two outs in the top of the third. The home run broke up a no-hitter for Kelsey Broadus in the circle. Despite the blemish, the junior left-handed still put in a solid day's work in the circle, allowing only two hits and one walk against the 14 batters she faced.
Veronica Lynch pitches a strong inning of relief for Boise State, with only one batter reaching base on an error.
With a 5-1 lead Boise State continued to extend their lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including a solo home run from Wade. Isabelle Butler sealed the game with a RBI double to get Wade across the plate with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, securing the run-rule victory.
The Blue and Orange scores six of their nine runs with two outs in the inning, a vast improvement from Friday's game where Boise State left eight runners on base.
YALE RECAP
The Broncos withstood a seventh-inning rally from Yale to complete the Saturday sweep.Â
With a 5-1 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh, Boise State gave up a pair of runs to give the Bulldogs a shot at completing a comeback. Micaela Leal was able to force a lineout to Seng at first base to end the game.Â
Leal made the transition from reliever, getting the starting nod against Yale. She did enough to give Boise State the victory, pitching 7.0 innings. The junior gave up only three hits and zero walks. Â
The Broncos again got off to a quick start, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Boise State would be plagued with stranding runners to end an inning, but they did just enough to finish the weekend 2-0 against Yale.
After taking the lead in the first inning, Yale was able to tie the game thanks to a Boise State error in the bottom half of the inning. Butler would again provide the presence at the plate for the Broncos with a 2 RBI home run in the top of the second.
Cervantes would send Johnson across the plate on a sacrifice fly to foul territory in the fourth inning, while Morgan Lamb homered in the sixth to give Boise State a pair of insurance runs.
Both Wade (2-for-2) and Lamb (3-for-3) finished the game with perfect outings at the plate. Butler would lead the team with two RBI.
