BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men's tennis claimed a 4-3 win over instate-rival Idaho State Sunday afternoon in Boise to improve to 3-1 overall. Freshman Simon Stenlund's win at No. 6 singles clinched the team victory with the blue and orange leading 4-1 at the time. Boise State dropped a tight doubles point 2-1, then won the first four singles matches to clinch the victory before the Bengals rallied to win the final two singles contests.
"Again the guys came out, were ready to go and competed really well," said coach Kristian Widen. "We knew Idaho State was a good team and had strong doubles play. All of the doubles matches were battles and tied 5-5 at one point, but they (ISU) managed to get an edge on us by winning two. I thought once singles play began we came out strong and took the momentum with three quick wins. We've talked a lot about getting momentum and hanging onto it, how important momentum is in this game. This match went back and forth in momentum, but in the end we got the win."
All three doubles contests were tied at 5-5 at one point before Boise State collected its lone doubles win from Stenlund and Stefan Lalovic in a tiebreaker on court three 7-6(5) over Francis Filipovich and Lukas Ridemar. The Bengals managed to claim wins at the top two doubles positions 7-6(5) on court one and 7-5 on court two to win the team point.Â
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles the Broncos regrouped. The Blue and Orange claimed three quick singles victories within 10 minutes of each other to storm into the lead. It started on court four where freshman Simon Arca Costas rolled to a straight-set win 6-3, 6-2 over Fynn Lohse. Arca Costas remains undefeated in team duals for singles at 4-0 while moving to 14-7 overall.Â
With the team score tied at 1-1, Luka Soskic put the Broncos ahead when he dispatched ISU's Lukas Ridemar in two sets 6-3, 6-2 on court three. Soskic is now 4-0 in singles after transferring to Boise State during winter break.
Wyatt DeMulling put Boise State within one of victory when he put away Gary Rendek 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. The junior from Seattle, Wash., is now 3-1 in team duals and 12-8 on the year.
That set the stage for Stenlund's first career match clinching win. The freshman from Sweden won set one in a tiebreaker before dispatching Idaho State's Francis Filipovich in the second to win 7-6(5), 6-3 and clinch the team victory. Stenlund is now 2-0 in team duals this spring and 14-4 overall.Â
Next up for the Broncos is a pair of matches in Eugene, Ore., next weekend against the Oregon Ducks on Friday and Portland State on Saturday.
