Adams registers only hit of the day for Broncos in 8-0 loss

AUSTIN, Texas – Going against the No. 16 team in the country, the Boise State softball team dropped an 8-0 decision to host-Texas, Saturday at McCoombs Field.

The Broncos (1-2) notched one hit in the game, but held All-American pitcher Miranda Elish to only one strikeout on the day. Boise State got their lone hit from Ashlyn Adams on an infield single to the left side of the field in the top of the fourth inning.

"The plan was to attack them and be aggressive (in the batter's box)," Boise State head coach Maggie Livreri said. "I thought we did a good job doing that, we just didn't quite put the ball in the right spots."

Texas (2-0) scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single from Taylor Ellsworth and an RBI double from Mary Iakopo to take a 2-0 lead. The Longhorns added a run in the second, third and fourth innings, before breaking out for three runs in the bottom of the fifth for the run-rule victory.

Boise State went with three pitchers on the day, starting redshirt senior Rainey Dyreson before bringing on both Kelsey Broadus and Micaela Leal in relief.

The Broncos almost escaped the fifth inning to extend the game to the top of the sixth. After allowing three-straight hits to start the bottom half of the fifth, Boise State got two outs on one at-bat thanks to stellar defense. Mallory Schattle hit a pop-up to Karlee Johnson at second base. Johnson made the grab for out number one, and then forced Shannon Rhodes into a run-down along the third-base line.

Rebekah Cervantes was able to make the tag on Rhodes for the second out. Bekah Alcozor would single into right field for the winning RBI to end the game at five innings.

Boise State will look to close the Texas Classic on a positive note tomorrow morning against Northwestern State (9 a.m. MT). The Broncos dropped the first game of the series to the Lady Demons in a 3-2 affair on Friday night.
