THE LIVRERI ERA BEGINS: The Texas Classic will mark a new era for Boise State softball, as they will mark the first games under head coach Maggie Livreri – the third head coach in program history. Livreri was hired in July to replace head coach Cindy Ball, who took the head coach job at UCF. Livreri spent the past seven years on staff at Utah, with the final two being as the associate head coach. The Utes made three NCAA tournament appearances, including two Super Regional appearances.
RESPECT IS EARNED:Â A year after proving the coaches of the conference wrong, Boise State received respect from their peers with the release of the Mountain West preseason poll. The Broncos were picked to win the conference, receiving eight of the nine first-place votes (coaches aren't allowed to vote for their own team). Boise State was followed by Fresno State in second, and San José State in third.
This weekend's game will mark the first all-time meeting against all three opponents – Boston College, Northwestern State and Texas. The Broncos and Longhorns both appeared at the Seattle Regional of the NCAA Tournament, but did not play one another.
SENG, CERVANTES RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Both Rebekah Cervantes and Alison Seng were named to Preseason All=-America teams leading up to the season opener. Both were named to Fastpitch News' honorable mention team, while Seng was also named tothe fourth team of Justin's World of Softball.Â
Seng was also named to USA Softball's Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List, becoming only the third player in program history to appear on the watch list (Devon Bridges- 2012, Tara Glover- 2013).
OPENING DAY IS GRAND: In the 10 years since the program was established, the Broncos have gone a combined 18-28 in season opening tournaments – with a record of 5-5 in season openers. The best start to a season Boise State has posted was going 4-1 at the Aggie Stampede to open the 2012 season in Davis, Calif.
TRYING TO BREAK THROUGH:Â Boise State will play one ranked opponent this weekend in host-Texas. The Longhorns have checked in at No. 16 in the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls, and as high as No. 9 in the inaugural Softball America poll.
The Broncos are 3-45-1 all-time in games against ranked opponents. The highest-ranked opponent the Broncos have beaten was No. 25 Fresno State in the 2011 season, with that being their last win over a ranked foe (April 30, 2011). Boise State swept that series in Boise, Idaho (April 29-30), winning 4-3, 3-2, and 12-9.
