BOISE, Idaho - The No. 13 Boise State gymnastics team (10-1, 5-0 MRGC) had an unbelievable night as a team Friday as they took down No. 17 Washington (6-5) and Utah State (5-8, 0-5 MRGC) with a score of 197.125 at Taco Bell Arena in front of 2,028 fans. Their total score is the fourth-highest in program history and their second-best of the season.
The Broncos did it all with star gymnast Shani Remme cheering on the team from the sidelines after a torn ACL ended her season last week.
"In the gym we talk all the time about if someone misses a routine, the next person that goes is going to step up their game and make up for it," co-head coach Neil Resnick said. "The team did that for Shani tonight."
The Broncos went in Olympic order and began on vault. Sarah Means continued her impressive campaign on the apparatus, leading the Broncos with a 9.925 to earn her eighth career vault victory. Gabby Bouza and Tatum Bruden each recorded 9.825s and Courtney McGregor finished with a 9.775.
The bars team tied their highest score in program history in rotation two, combining for a 49.575. McGregor was awarded a perfect 10 from one of the judges to lead the Broncos with a 9.975 to take home the event title. This ties the highest individual bars score in program history and is a career best for the junior. Â Alexis Stokes and Emily Muhlenhaupt continued their dominance on the apparatus, both scoring 9.925s to tie for second, while Bouza crushed her previous career-best 9.850, recording a 9.900.
The Boise State beam team continued the Broncos' impressive run, posting a score of 49.425, tied for the fourth-highest beam score in program history. Alex Esmerian performed a nearly flawless routine to set a career-best score of 9.950 and take home the event title. Isabella Amado and Bouza finished with back-to-back career-bests, with a 9.925 and a 9.900, respectively, going second and third in the event.
Floor was the final event for the Broncos. Amado set yet another career high with a 9.850 to tie for third with teammate McGregor. Maddi Nilson also matched her career best with a 9.800 and Hope Masiado finished with a 9.775.
McGregor finished tied for second in the all-around, totaling a solid 39.375. She is now the Broncos' sole all-arounder.
"I think this this performance was huge," Resnick said. "Shani has done so much for this program and she has carried us so much. It's time for us to carry her, and that's what we're going to do."
