Comeback Falls Short in Opener

Broncos (23-6, 3-4 MW) score a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but can't tie the game in the final frame

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Down by three runs entering the top of the seventh, the Boise State softball team couldn't find the final hit they needed to tie the game, falling to San José State 5-4 in the series opener at Spartan Softball Field.

Entering the top of the seventh inning down by three runs, Boise State (23-6, 3-4 MW) scored twice to make it a one-run game. Kora Wade led off the inning with a single, followed by a double down the right field line from Ashlyn Adams to advance to third. Wade tagged the base on a sacrifice fly from Rebekah Cervantes to pull the Broncos within two.

Wade would finish the night 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring twice. She has now reached base in 21-consecutive games and is riding an 11-game hitting streak. Cervantes finished the night with two RBI and a triple.

Adams would reach home from second on a RBI single up the middle from Jessica McKay to pull the Broncos within one. McKay advanced to second on the throw to put the tying run in scoring position. The Broncos would be unable to find the timely hit to tie the game, as the next two batters were called out on line drives in the infield.

Pitching in relief, junior Micaela Leal finished the night with a strong outing for the Blue and Orange. She struck out two batters in 5.0 innings of action while allowing only four hits.

San José State (23-10, 3-1 MW) scored three runs in the bottom of the second. After starter Kelsey Broadus loaded the bases on a trio of walks, Alyssa Graham cleared the bases on a double that was inches away from the left field line. The Spartans added a pair of runs on a solo home run and a RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

The Broncos out-hit San José State, 11-4 on the night. This is only the second time the team has lost this season when out-hitting their opponent.

The series will continue tomorrow at 1 p.m. MT.
