Boise State (23-7, 3-5 MW) overcame a three-run deficit in the seventh, but lost on a walkoff single in extra innings
SAN JOSE, Calif. – For the second-straight day, the Boise State softball program entered the top of the seventh trailing San José State by three runs. The Broncos were able to tie the game at 5-5, but fell in the bottom of the eighth on a walkoff single from Madison Aurin, Saturday at Spartan Softball Field.
Boise State (23-7, 3-5 MW) scored three runs in the top of the seventh, lead off by a double from Serena Huchingson. She reached home two batters later on a single from Karlee Johnson that dropped into shallow left field. Alison Seng squared for a bunt and reached first safely to load the bases with no outs. Boise State would score after Kora Wade drew a walk to make it a one-run game.
The Spartans (24-10, 4-1 MW) got the first out of the inning on a fielder's choice from Ashlyn Adams. Johnson went home from third, but wasn't in time for the forceout.Â
Rebekah Cervantes would hit a fly ball to the shortstop that was bobbled for an error. Isabelle Butler scored from third, but the Spartans were able to turn the double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.
San José State threatened in the bottom half of the inning, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Justene Molina was able to turn a groundball to first base for the final out of the inning and send the game to the eighth.
The Broncos went down in order in the eight, setting Aurin up for a walkoff single with runners on second and third.
The loss clinches the series for San José State. Boise State will have the opportunity to avoid the sweep, with first pitch at 1 p.m. MT on Sunday.
