Fuller becomes first woman in program history to advance to the final of the mile, Ostrander and Schoffield earn All-America honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  Alexis Fuller made history for the Boise State track and field team to highlight the first day of the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The senior became the first woman to advance to the final of a middle-distance or distance event at an indoor championship in program history.

Fuller set a strong tone for the Broncos at the start of the meet, advancing to tomorrow's final of the women's mile. The senior won her heat in a personal best of 4:36.27 to earn one of the heat's four automatic qualifying spots.

Running towards the back of the field early in the race, Fuller methodically moved up to put herself in contention. With 400m to go, she began to pass on the outside of the lead pack entering the curve on the final lap. Battling with Michigan's Hannah Meier entering the final curve before the homestretch, Fuller was able to beat the Wolverine by a stride, 4:36.27 to 4:36.34.

Fuller's time was the fastest of the preliminary heats in the mile.

"It was great for Fuller to qualify," head coach Corey Ihmels said. "I thought she came into the race with a lot of confidence, and she did a great job battling through the field. I couldn't be more excited for her to have that kind of a race."

In the women's 5000m, Allie Ostrander earned First-Team All-America honors with an eighth-place finish. The redshirt junior took the lead early in the race, and held steady until the final mile. Ostrander's final time was 15:46.69.

Despite not advancing to tomorrow's final of the 800m, Kristie Schoffield capped an incredible season by earning Second-Team All-America honors on Friday. The sophomore finished sixth in her heat of the event, running a time of 2:10.78.

The women's distance medley relay team of Schoffield, Fuller, Kelly Moodry and MaLeigha Menegatti took 12th in 11:41.84.

Boise State will be represented by both Fuller and Ostrander on Saturday to conclude the national championships. Fuller will open the day for the Broncos in the final of the mile at 3:10 p.m. MT. Ostrander will conclude the day with the final of the women's 3000m at 5:25 p.m. MT.
