BOISE, Idaho. (3/9/19) – Boise State men's tennis fell 4-0 to the 22nd-ranked BYU Cougars Saturday afternoon in Boise, Idaho. The Cougars took the lead early on with the doubles point defeating Boise State 2-0 with wins on courts one and three.
"I'm really happy with the way the guys competed today against the 22nd-ranked team in the country," said Boise State head coach Kristian Widen. "This match has grown into a rivalry over the years and is also a tough one. I was pleased with the way Luka (Soskic) played at No. 1 singles for the first time this year. Overall, the match did not go our way, but we played well against a good team and will use this experience to build upon."
BYU's Sean Hill and Jeffrey Hsu defeated Wyatt DeMulling and Stefan Lalovic at the No. 1 position, finishing with a score of 6-2. Mateo Vereau and Matthew Pierce then clinched the doubles point with a win over Simon Stenlund and Luka Soskic 6-3 on court three.
The Broncos fought hard in singles matches but fell with three matches unfinished in third sets. BYU's Hsu beat the Broncos Jack Heslin with a score of 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Max Blancaneaux was downed by Mateo Vereau in two sets 6-3, 6-4.
The match was clinched when sophomore Luka Soskic fell to Cougar's Sean Hill 6-4, 6-4 to give the Cougars the win. This was Soskic's first time playing at No. 1 singles this season and broke his win streak to bring his overall record to 7-1.
The Broncos will be back on the court to take on instate-rival University of Idaho tomorrow, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
