Cervantes' Walk-Off Lifts Boise State to Win Over No. 25 Colorado State

5/3/2019 9:19:00 PM | Softball

Rebekah Cervantes hit a walk-off single in the 12th inning to lead Boise State (33-10, 11-8 MW) to the program's first victory over a ranked opponent at Dona Larsen Park

BOISE, Idaho – There was no shortage of intrigue Friday at Dona Larsen Park for the Boise State softball program. Rallying through a 12-inning marathon, the Broncos got a walk-off single from Rebekah Cervantes to defeat No. 25 Colorado State, 6-5 in the opening game of the senior weekend series.

The win is the first over a ranked-opponent at Dona Larsen Park, and the first win over a ranked foe for Boise State (33-10, 11-8 MW) since sweeping then No. 25 Fresno State (April 29-30, 2011). The Broncos are now 4-46-1 against ranked opponents.

With the game tied at 5-5 in the top of the 12th inning, Boise State was able to load the bases with no outs. Alison Seng drew a walk to start the inning for the Broncos, and was replaced on the base paths by India Kelly. Kora Wade followed with a bunt single setting up a bases-loaded situation after Ashlyn Adams drew a walk.

With the bases loaded on a 2-1 count, Cervantes ripped a single up the left side to bring Kelly across the plate for the winning run.

The Broncos were able to force extra innings thanks to a three-run rally over the sixth and seventh innings. Colorado State (36-9, 17-5 MW) took a 5-2 lead thanks to back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning, and a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning.

Jessica McKay hit a triple which went past the diving Colorado State center field to bring Cervantes home from first base in the bottom of the sixth. With McKay on third, Bradie Fillmore hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a one-run game. Justene Molina tied the game on a RBI single from Adams up the right side, sliding into home from second base with the Broncos down to their final out.

Boise State will look to clinch the series tomorrow at 4 p.m.
