Broncos Edge Vandals in Defensive Showdown
8/23/2019 11:18:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MOSCOW, Idaho - In what proved to be a chippy low-scoring battle typical of any good rivalry game and despite being in enemy territory, the Boise State women's soccer team came away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against the Idaho Vandals, Friday night.
The cool thing about this game, even though it is one of the hardest places to come play and win a game is that it prepares us for a lot of the things we will see in conference, explained head coach Jim Thomas.
In a game where offense was at a premium, the defense showed up strong for the Broncos, "I think we saw fitness-wise players who could play longer, they started to struggle and other players can do that kind of thing all night," said Thomas. "Players like Raven [Sweeney] and Lillie [French] really changed the complexion of the game by being able to fight fire with fire."
The lone goal in the game came in the 18th minute as senior Raimee Sherle sank her first goal of the season off a penalty kick after a foul by Idaho's Kayleigh Frederick. The Boise State defense would lock down the Vandals the rest of the way.
Despite being outshot by Idaho 8-6, Boise State keeper Sydney Smith logged four saves in her first-collegiate start to secure victory for the Blue and Orange.
Coach Thomas was impressed with the determination of his team facing tough conditions, "They are physical and the game is difficult and disjointed to play in and they are certainly difficult to play all the time. We'll never play in a louder crowd than that."
The Broncos return home to host Eastern Washinton in the home opener, Aug. 25 at Boas Soccer Complex. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. MT. It will also be a "Blue Out," fans wearing blue will receive half-priced admission, with the first 50 fans receiving a Bronco T-shirt.Â
