The Boise State women's tennis team collected seven singles victories in what was a solid opening day of the 2019-20 season.
BOISE, Idaho – Seven singles wins highlighted the opening day for the Broncos 2019-20 season as two pairs - Wiktoria Nosek and Joana Baptista, as well as Vanessa Timm and Ana Conde Vendrell - advanced to the semifinal round of the third annual Barb Chandler Classic in Boise, Idaho.
The tournament format has schools pairing up two of their players to match up against a pair of opponents. They play to a best-of-three involving one doubles match and two singles matches to see which pair will advance to the next round.
Senior Nosek and freshman Baptista were the first pair to hit the court for the Broncos, and they used the opportunity to make a statement. Competing in the Blue Flight, the duo defeated Idaho State's Megan Poe and Hristina Cvetkovic 6-1 in the doubles portion of the match. Nosek followed this up with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(2) win over Cvetkovic, while Baptista earned her first collegiate victory by beating Poe 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to put the tandem into the next round.
In the Orange Flight, Timm and Conde Vendrell also swept their opponents to advance to the semifinals. In the doubles match, the pair took care of business by downing Idaho State's Angela Walker and Alexandra Arkhipov 6-4. Timm then bested the Bengals' Walker 6-3, 7-6(2), while freshman Conde Vendrell battled back to beat Arkhipov 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-4 for her first singles victory as a Bronco.
Back in the Blue Flight, after dropping the doubles point, sophomore Emily Strande picked up where she left off last season by rallying to dominate sets two and three after dropping the first to defeat Weber State's Yuuna Ukita 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Strande and partner Mae McCutcheon, however, were eliminated in the first round and will compete in the Blue Flight consolation bracket tomorrow.
Sophomore Frankie Trella put on a spectacular performance as she only needed two sets to defeat Idaho State's Madison Fenske 6-2, 6-3. Her partner Jovana Kuljanin battled back to force a third set against the Bengals' Melissa Coburn, but came up just short in the end. After dropping the doubles point, the two will play in the consolation bracket of the Orange Flight tomorrow and Sunday.
Redshirt freshman Camryn Moortgat was the last Bronco on the court, and she made sure to send her team home in high spirits. The Boise native came out on top in a back-and-forth contest against Idaho State's Adriene Pavek 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 to earn her first singles victory of her collegiate career. She and partner Corey Patton Lossner dropped the match 2-1 and will continue in the White Flight's round robin tomorrow.
The Barb Chandler Classic will resume action tomorrow morning with the semifinal rounds starting 8 a.m. at Appleton Tennis Center. Fans can park in the Lincoln Parking Garage across from the student union building. Be sure to use the parking kiosk and select the "Tennis" option to ensure your parking is validated.
