Senior Janell Walley recorded her fifth double-double of the season in Boise State’s home conference win over the Falcons.
BOISE, Idaho - Janell Walley's double-double on 14 kills and 15 digs led Boise State to a Mountain West Conference victory, 3-1, over Air Force Saturday afternoon in Bronco Gym. After winning the first set, then dropping the second to the Falcons, Boise State regrouped to take control in the final two periods.Â
The first two sets saw a combined 20 ties and seven lead changes, while the third and fourth sets saw two ties and one lead change as the Blue and Orange claimed the win 25-18, 24-26, 25-22, 25-19. Boise State hit 28.4 percent as a team and held the Falcons to 14.2 percent.Â
"It was great to get a conference win," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "The matches are getting harder and harder in conference play. We started off with Utah State and Air Force this week and I think it gave the new kids a taste of how good the competition really is in the Mountain West. We just have to keep upping our game. It's not surprising that Air Force was able to take a set off us today, I think they are going to pick-off a lot of teams this year. I was proud of the way our team responded after losing a tough second set, that we were able to come back to win the last two."Â
In addition to her double-double, Walley hit a team-high 50 percent on 14 kills and one error on 26 attempts. She also added five block assists to finish with a team-best 16.5 points.Â
Offensively, Kiley Lewis had her best match of the year recording 12 kills while hitting 32.1 percent. Jessica Donahue hit 38.9 percent for seven kills to go with a season-high (tied) eight blocks with one solo. Lauren Ohlinger added eight kills, two service aces, nine digs and four blocks with two solos. Danielle Boss tallied a team-high 42 assists from the setter position.
Defensively, Allison Casillas recorded a career-high 18 digs followed by Walley's 15 and Jordi Holdaway's 10.Â
The Broncos have now won four straight and 10 of their last 11 matches to improve to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in MW play. They will continue their three-match homestand next week when Nevada and San Jose State come to town.
