The Boise State women's tennis team started their year off on the right foot by taking down Seattle U 5-2.
EAGLE, Idaho – Five Broncos competed in their first dual matches of their careers but that did not stop the Boise State women's tennis team from earning a convincing 5-2 win over Seattle U on Friday night at the Eagle Tennis Club.
This marked the first time the Bronco men's and women's programs competed simultaneously together. The event drew quite a crowd as Bronco Nation packed the spectators section of the twelve-court club.
The Broncos (1-0) started things off with a very impressive showing in doubles, winning all three matches and taking the early 1-0 lead. Camryn Moortgat teamed up with Joana Baptista to win 6-2 on court three, while Vanessa Timm and Mae McCutcheon took care of business 6-1 on court two. Senior Lilian Poling paired up with newcomer Holly Stewart and the pair impressed with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 doubles spot to send the Broncos into the break with some momentum.
In singles play, Stewart – who joined the team earlier this month – dazzled as the No. 3 seed by cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory against the Redhawks' Jillian Rasmussen. At the No. 2 position, freshman Baptista also dominated in a two-set win over Kyra Jung 6-2, 6-1 to put the Broncos up 3-0 and one win away from clinching the match outright.
With the match in reach, Timm recovered from a shaky start on court four to bounce back and win 7-5, 6-2 to clinch the season-opening victory for the Blue and Orange. Poling added to the Bronco lead in a hard-fought contest against Seattle's Hannah Gianan which ended in a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) score on court one.
Although the Broncos had clinched the match, the Redhawks continued to fight and took the day's final two matches on courts five and six, bringing the contest to a close with the final score being 5-2 in favor of Boise State.
Next up for the Broncos will be another simultaneous match with the men's program against Idaho State on Sunday at 10 a.m. (Mountain). The matches will again be held at Eagle Tennis Club.
