BOISE, Idaho - Boise State plays its first full road week of Mountain West play, beginning Wednesday with an 8 p.m. MT meeting at San José State. The Broncos continue the two-game road week Saturday in Reno, taking on Nevada Saturday at 3 p.m. MT.
LAST TIME OUT
Boise State had its 18-game conference home winning streak snapped last Saturday, dropping an 85-80 decision to Fresno State at ExtraMile Arena.
The Broncos led by as many as 17 in the second quarter, and took a 10-point advantage into the fourth, but a 35-point final frame for Fresno State pushed the Bulldogs past Boise State for the win.
Mallory McGwire paced the Broncos with her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points to go with 14 rebounds. McGwire also went 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Overall, five Broncos scored in double figures in the contest, the second time that has been achieved this season.
WHO'S NEXT
The Broncos will begin this two-road trip week Wednesday in the Bay Area, taking on second-place San José State at 8 p.m. MT.
The Spartans (14-6, 7-1 MW) have been bolstered by the addition of transfers Ayzhiana Basallo (Cal Poly) and Tyra Whitehead (Wake Forest), who rank first and second, respectively, on the team in scoring. Basallo paces the Spartans with 20.8 points and 5.06 assists a game, while Whitehead is averaging a double-double of 13.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
Boise State leads the all-time series against San José State, 22-11, and has won nine in a row over the Spartans.
Over this nine-game winning streak over the Spartans, Boise State has averaged 86.1 points per game.
FIRST-TIME LOOK
San José State on Wednesday marks the final Mountain West team the Broncos have yet to play this season. After Wednesday's contest, the Broncos' eight remaining games will be return bouts against conference foes, with the exception of Colorado State and Fresno State, who Boise State only plays once each this regular season.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Boise State has found itself, as well as a handful of players, ranked fairly high in early national stat rankings through Jan. 26.
As a team, the Broncos rank ninth in assists (358). The Broncos' 45.0 field-goal percentage ranks 28th, and the team's 156 3-pointers are 28th in the country.
Individually, redshirt senior point guard Jayde Christopher leads the nation with 162 assists, and is second with 7.71 assists per game. Senior guard Riley Lupfer is eighth in the country with 63 3-pointers made, and 17th with 3.00 triples made per game.
RARE HOME LOSS
Boise State suffered a rare home loss with last Saturday's 85-80 defeat at the hands of Fresno State. Despite being the third home loss this season (Nov. 10 against Missouri State, Nov. 20 against Washington State), the loss to the Bulldogs not only snapped Boise State's 18-game conference home winning streak, but was just the fourth home loss for the Broncos in its last 33 outings at ExtraMile Arena.
Boise State went 14-1 at home last year, with the only blemish a 74-55 loss to then-No. 5 Louisville on Nov. 19, 2018.
BACK TO THE BAY FOR COLEMAN
This midweek trip to San Jose marks a Homecoming of sorts for redshirt senior forward A'Shanti Coleman, a San Francisco native.
Playing in front of friends and family has been a boost to Coleman when the Broncos travel to San Jose. In three-career games against the Spartans, Coleman averages 15.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and shoots 64.7 percent (22-for-34) from the field.
LOTS OF SCORING ON TAP
A Broncos-Spartans matchup usually means end-to-end action and plenty of scoring, as at least one team has hit the 80-point mark in 11 of the last 14 meetings.
Boise State, for its part, has averaged 86.1 points over its current nine-game winning streak over the Spartans, topping out with 112 in a 112-80 win Jan. 24, 2018, at the Event Center.
The Broncos nearly hit the century mark against the Spartans again last Jan. 12, coming up a point shy in a 99-68 win in Boise.
HOME OF THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE
The Broncos travel to California this week, home of In-N-Out Burger and its beloved double-double.
Yet In-N-Out may not be serving the only double-doubles Wednesday night, as Bronco center Mallory McGwire has posted a team-high six this season, including four in Mountain West play. Her latest double-double was served to Fresno State last Saturday, as McGwire finished with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
ORDERING OFF THE SECRET MENU
Not everyone who visits In-N-Out knows about the joint's "secret" menu, similar to how many Bronco opponents are caught by surprise by Mallory McGwire's outside shooting.
After hitting a career-best 3-of-4 attempts from behind the arc last Saturday against Fresno State, McGwire is shooting 40.7 percent (24-for-59) from 3-point range this season, including 41.4 percent (12-for-29) in Mountain West play.
FIRST QUARTER LOCKDOWN
Boise State's defense has done a solid job locking opponents down early, enabling the Broncos to get out to early leads.
Over the last seven games, Bronco foes have combined to shoot just 30.5 percent (32-for-105) in the first quarter. Most recently, Fresno State went just 5-for-19 in the first quarter of last Saturday's game.
No team over that span has made more than six field goals in the opening frame, with Nevada (Jan. 4) the only opponent to reach that number.
EVERYONE CONTRIBUTES
For just the second time this season, Boise State had five players finish in double digits scoring in last Saturday's game against Fresno State. The only other time it had happened this season was in the season opener Nov. 5 against Lewis-Clark State College.
Against Fresno State, Mallory McGwire led the way with 19 points, followed by Braydey Hodgins (13), Riley Lupfer (12), Ellie Woerner (11), and A'Shanti Coleman (10).
