SAN JOSE, Calif. - Boise State just couldn't get the shots to go Wednesday night, and its comeback attempts stalled late in a 74-61 loss at San Jose State.

The Broncos (14-8, 6-4 MW) shot a season-low 33.8 percent in the contest, and it was a scoreless stretch over five minutes, 54 seconds in the fourth quarter over which they went 0-for-9 that allowed San Jose State (15-6, 9-1 MW) to reel off seven-straight points to take a 13-point lead. The win snapped Boise State's nine-game winning streak in the series against the Spartans.

Riley Lupfer's fallaway jumper cut San Jose State's lead to 59-53 with 8:06 to play, but that was as close as Boise State would get. Ayzhiana Basallo, who finished with a game-high 28 points and was 12-for-12 from the line, scored on the Spartans' next trip down, and the San Jose State defense locked down on the Broncos. Tyra Whitehead's three-point play with 5:35 remaining upped the Spartan lead to 13 at 66-53, and Basallo's driving layup with just over three minutes to play got the lead to 15 and all but extinguished any Bronco comeback hopes.

Whitehead finished with 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting.

Boise State held a 15-14 lead after a first quarter which didn't lack in kinetic energy what it did for shooting, as the teams combined to go just 12-for-35. But San Jose State turned it up in the second quarter, shooting 66.7 percent (10-for-15) and scoring 26 points, and the Broncos struggled to keep up. A'Shanti Coleman, who led the Broncos with her first-career double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds Wednesday, hit a jumper to tie things up at 29-29 with 2:30 left in the half.

But the half would not end in the Broncos favor. Basallo scored four-straight points to put the Spartans up for good, and Megan Anderson hit a corner 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to cap San Jose State's 11-2, half-ending run which put the Broncos in a 40-31 hole.

Braydey Hodgins hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the second half to bring the Broncos within six, but Boise State would hit just four of its remaining 18 attempts of the quarter. The 26.3-percenter shooting mark hamstrung any Bronco comeback attempts, while Whitehead's 10 third-quarter points on 5-for-5 shooting helped the Spartans extend the lead to 13 by the end of the frame.
