Five Top-10 Finishes Highlight Day Three of MW Championships

MINNEAPOLIS - Five top-10 results highlighted the third day of the Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships for Boise State. The Broncos' top performers where Lauren Vitort who placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle, as well as, Molly Hogg and Madesyn Ronquillio who placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. In all, Boise State qualified 13 swimmers to Friday night's finals.
During the morning prelims Boise State saw four student-athletes set new career bests while 10 recorded season best times. That was followed by four more career-best and eight season-best during the evening finals.
"I was really pleased with our backstroke today as we had several people swim well," said head coach Christine Mabile. "Everyone cut time in the backstroke which was a pretty big deal and a great way to end the evening, that gives us a lot of momentum and encouragement going into tomorrow. I also thought that the girls that made finals, did a really nice job of stepping up. For a couple of them it was the first time they experienced the finals, so that's really exciting."
The Broncos have 511.5 points after three days and find themselves in seventh-place. San Diego State has a big lead on the field with 1,058 points while second-place Nevada has 729.5. Meanwhile, Saturday will be a big day as the Broncos try to climb the standings, 106 points separate third through seventh place.
The 200-yard freestyle relay started the evening finals off with Boise State's A team featuring Robin Pinger, Emmie Jennings, Vitort and Hogg clocked a season-best 1:32.68 to place fourth overall.
Katie McCoy was the lone Bronco to advance to the finals of the 400-yard individual medley Friday night. The sophomore turned in a career-best 4:18.79 to win the B final and placed ninth overall.
Three Broncos reached the 100-yard butterfly finals led by freshman Beatriz Zoppei who set her career-best time twice on the day, first in the prelims (54.64) and then again in the B final with a 54.27 to take second in the heat and 10th overall.
Jennings was also in the B final where she clocked a season-best 54.94 to take 12th overall. Meanwhile, Ronquillio turned in a season-best 56.48 to take fourth in the C final and 20th in the final standings.
Vitort turned in a 1:50.57 in the A final of the 200-yard freestyle to place eight, which led three Broncos in the event finals. Freshman Emma Brady recorded a 1:50.48 to take 18th followed by Hayley Hill in 20th with a 1:52.03.
Boise State advanced two into the 100-yard breaststroke finals led by Pinger who turned in a 1:03.19 to place 12th, followed by freshman Carly Palmer who finished 22nd with a 1:04.70.
Boise State had the most participants in the 100-yard backstroke with four. Two recorded career-best with Madison Frederick tallying a 55.49 and Lauren Sale a 55.69 to place 18th and 19th, respectively.
The Broncos had two in the A final of the 100 back where Hogg clocked a season-best 54.69 to place sixth, while Ronquillio recorded a season-best 54.75 to finish in eighth.
One other notable performance on the day was freshman Delaney Phillips who set a new career-best time twice for the 100 breast. In the morning prelims she swam 1:05.03, then shaved a full second off that in a time trial Friday night with a 1:03.88.
The 2020 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude Saturday in Minneapolis with prelims starting at 10 a.m. (Mountain) and the finals at 5:30 p.m. (MT).
