Broncos Fall to Top-20 Teams Arizona and Arizona State

TUCSON, Ariz. - Boise State beach volleyball knew it had a challenge waiting for it when the Broncos looked at Feb. 22 on the schedule which had two nationally-ranked teams listed on it. Boise State battled hard, but in the end the Broncos fell to No. 15 Arizona 5-0 in the morning, then to No. 20 Arizona State 5-0 in the afternoon.
The two matches wrapped up the weekend for the Broncos as they finished the Cactus Classic in Tucson at 1-3 overall. They will be back in action March 14 when they take on Vanguard and CSUN in Northridge, Calif.Â
ARIZONA RECAP
The Bronco beach volleyball team came up on the short end of a 5-0 score at 15th-ranked Arizona Saturday morning in Tucson. Joey Benson and Alyssa Wissinger led the Broncos against the Wildcats rallying from one set down at No. 4 pair to force their match to a third set before falling 21-14, 8-21, 15-11 to Jonny Baham and Halie Hess.Â
Boise State's top tandem of Erin Martin and Lauren Ohlinger battled hard but fell 21-17, 21-15 to the Wildcats top duo of Brooke Burling and Olivia Hallaran.
ARIZONA STATE RECAP
The second match of the day was similar to the first in that it was a 5-0 victory for a nationally-ranked team the No. 20 Arizona State Sun Devils. However, the match was much closer with all five pairs being tightly contested.Â
Boise State's No. 1 pair of Erin Martin and Ohlinger took the Sun Devils top duo of Sam Plaster and Katelyn Carballo to the end. The Broncos won the first set 21-18 before the ASU pair rallied to take the last two to earn the win 18-21, 21-14, 15-9.
Olivia Bradley and Kylee Johnson saw both of their sets on court five go to extra points before coming up short to Cierra Flood and Lauren Weintraub22-20, 23-21.Â
In the end, Arizona State's experience out lasted the Blue and Orange for the victory.Â
