Boise State wins two titles at Barb Chandler Classic on Saturday

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State tennis saw two of its four teams win their respective draws at the Barb Chandler Classic on Saturday at the Appleton Tennis Center. Joana Baptista and Pauline Ersntberger beat Idaho's Katherine Jhang and Andrea Redondo 2-1 to advance to the Blue Flight's championship match on Sunday. That was followed by Nicole Discenza and Bhakti Shah winning their Orange Flight semifinal 3-0 to move into the final. In both cases, their scheduled championship opponents from Brigham Young withdrew from the tournament Saturday afternoon to hand the Broncos the titles.

Baptista and Ernstberger opened Saturday's action with a win over their Vandal opponents. The match began with the Boise State tandem being edged out in a tiebreaker 7-6(6) by Jhang and Redondo. They then regrouped heading into singles play where they rolled with Baptista defeating Jhang 6-1, 6-0, while Ernstberger dispatched Redondo 6-0, 6-3 as the Broncos claimed the overall match 2-1.

In the Orange draw, Discenza and Shah swept past Mariajose Hernandez and Emily Rees from Portland State taking the overall match 3-0. They opened by taking the doubles competition 6-4. The Boise State duo then claimed straight-set victories in both singles contests. Shah downed the Vikings' Hernandez 6-3, 6-2, while Discenza dominated Rees 6-1, 6-1.

The Barb Chandler Classic with wrap up Sunday morning starting at 9 a.m. at the Appleton Tennis Center on campus. Boise State's Shauna Heffernan and Corey Patton Lossner will play for the consolation title of the Orange Flight starting at 9 a.m.
