SPOKANE, Wash. – The Boise State track and field team concluded the 2021 calendar year with six top-three finishes at the Spokane Invitational, Saturday.
Junior MaLeigha Menegatti garnered the Broncos' lone individual title, topping the podium in the women's 800-meter run. Her time of 2:07.66 is the fourth-fastest time in school history and a personal best by nearly five seconds.
"MaLeigha continues to impress," said assistant track and field coach Gavin O'Neal. "She opened the indoor season with a huge personal best, picking up where she left off from last outdoor season. I'm thrilled with the direction she and the group are headed after today."
The Blue and Orange also captured event titles in both 4x400m relays. The women's relay team of Alyssa Cullen, Anita Taviore, Kristie Schoffield and Menegatti crossed the finish line in a time 3:47.51, seven seconds ahead of second-place San Francisco.
On the men's side, the quartet of Jose Rubio, Chip Mitchell, David Pierce and Brayden Durfee bested second-place Eastern Oregon by eight seconds, garnering the gold medal in a time of 3:20.14.
Freshman Alyssa Cullen and sophomore Nyenuchi Okemgbo also notched spots on the podium.
In her Boise State debut, Cullen took second in the women's 400m (58.05), as did Okemgbo in the women's 60m hurdles (8.71).
Freshman Maggie Larson added to the Broncos' list of top-three finishes. In her first meet as a Bronco, Larson secured the bronze medal in the women's triple jump (11.96m).
In total, the Blue and Orange achieved 14 personal-best marks.
"We are excited about the groups' progress through the fall and can't wait until we start competing in January," said O'Neal.
Following winter break, Boise State splits its squad across Washington and Texas. The Broncos will send student-athletes to both Spokane, Wash., for the Cougar Classic (Jan. 14-15) and to Seattle, Wash., for the UW Indoor Preview (Jan. 15).
