BOISE, Idaho – Boise State track and field experienced a record-setting weekend in Washington as Bronco jumpers and sprinters competed at the Cougar Classic in Spokane, and the distance squad raced in Seattle at the UW Indoor Preview.
"It's great to be competing indoors after two years," said head coach Corey Ihmels. Both groups had some fantastic performances, but more importantly, there were competitive opportunities for everyone today. I am looking forward to training and seeing everyone's performances improve."
In the first race of the day at the Cougar Classic, junior Dafni Georgiou broke her own school record in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles. Her blistering time of 8.47 bested her previous record from 2020 (8.48) and set a facility record.
"I feel like I still have a lot to accomplish," said Georgiou. It was my first [60m hurdles] of the season, and we have until February to keep improving."
Freshman Anita Taviore also raced to a school record in the 200m dash. Her time of 24.06 narrowly broke Mackenzie Flannigan's nine-year-old record (24.07; 2013).
Junior MaLeigha Menegatti also etched her name into the record book. The Pueblo West, Colo., native garnered an individual title for the Broncos, topping the podium in the women's 800m run. Her time of 2:07.50 is the fourth-fastest in program history and set a facility record.
On the field, freshman Maggie Larson captured Boise State's second individual title of the day, and the first of her collegiate career, jumping a personal-best 12.03m in the triple jump. Larson also notched a fourth-place finish in the women's long jump (5.45m).
In Seattle, seniors Dario De Caro and Jonathan Shields highlighted Boise State's performances.
De Caro recorded a sixth-place finish in the mile, running the second-fastest time in program history (4:00.32).
Shield's time of 7:54.23 in the 3,000m was also the second-fastest in school history.
"Dario and Johnny were fantastic and continue to put their names at the top of the record book," said Ihmels. "I am very proud of both of them."
This marks the second record-book performance of the indoor season for De Caro and Shields, as they both notched top-five times in the 5,000m last month at the Sharon-Colyear Danville Season Opener.
Following a weekend off, the Broncos will split their squad between Texas and Washington for the Texas Tech Invitational and Washington Invitation, Jan. 28-29.
