Boise State Falls Twice at Georgia Tech

2/12/2021 4:20:00 PM | Softball

ATLANTA, Ga.  – Boise State softball opened the season Friday with a pair of losses at the hands of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. Five Broncos tallied hits on the day with Bella Rocco leading the way with two RBI. Boise State moved to 0-2 overall with a doubleheader on the slate at Georgia State on Saturday followed by a single game versus Radford on Sunday.

GAME 1 RECAP

The first matchup started out as a pitchers' duel with neither team getting their offense started until midway through the contest. Sara Johnson started the game for the Blue and Orange and had a solid four innings pitching shutout ball and tallying eight strikeouts, two per inning.
Then in the bottom of the fifth a key four-pitch stretch proved decisive for the Yellow Jackets. In four pitches Georgia Tech jumped on the Broncos recording a single, a ball, a double, followed by a three-run home run to take the lead and momentum up 3-0.

Georgia Tech added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, before Boise State managed to get a run on the scoreboard. In the top of the seventh, true-freshman Jordy Hutchins hammered the ball over the center field wall to record her first career home run to make the final score 5-1 Yellow Jackets.

Ashlyn Adams led the Broncos with two hits followed by Hutchins and India Kelly with one each, Hutchins had the lone run scored on the homer.

Three Broncos debuted for Boise State as starters in game one. Sara Johnson, a transfer from Towson University, started at pitcher, while true-freshmen Hutchins was the designated player with Hailey Hayes starting behind the plate. A fourth newcomer came in off the bench as Abby Bumcrot came in at catcher during the fifth inning.

GAME 2 RECAP

Boise State came out strong in game two as the Broncos struck for a run in the top of the first. India Kelly opened the game with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kelly reached third on a ground out by Ashlyn Adams, then came on a ground out by Rocco to second.
Down one, Georgia Tech answered in the bottom half of the first with four runs, three came on a homer by Tech's Kennedy Cowden.

The Broncos pulled one back in the third when Autumn Bennett bunted for a single and later scored on a Rocco single through the left side to make 4-2 Georgia Tech.

Once again, the Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the third. With two out and two on based a questionable call by the umpire kept Georgia Tech alive. The play looked like Alison Seng had made a stop on a hit that appeared to just cross over first base followed by her completing the ground out, only to have the umpire call the ball foul. Two pitches later the batter hit a three-run home run to put the game out of reach 7-2.

That took the air out of the Broncos as the Yellow Jackets added three more runs, two in the fourth and one in the sixth to end the game 10-2.

Rocco and Bennett led the team with a hit each, while Rocco recorded two RBI.

Bumcrot recorded her first career start in game two. True-freshman Taylor Caudill earned her first career start in the circle, while another freshman Ashlyn Hayden came in off the bench. Kiele Miller, a transfer from Creighton, came in at pitcher to close the game.
