Boise State's women's tennis team had its winning streak snapped as they fell to BYU 5-2 on Friday.

BOISE, Idaho – Despite good wins from Joana Baptista and Pauline Ernstberger, the Boise State women's tennis team fell to BYU on Friday night in a 5-2 battle at Boise.

The Cougars were able to get things going early in doubles. Boise State's Ernstberger and Holly Stewart battled back on court two to win 6-3, but in the end the doubles point went to the Cougars after they claimed wins on courts one and three. This put the Broncos at an early 1-0 disadvantage heading into singles play.

In singles play BYU jumped on things quickly, earning wins at the No. 1 and 6 positions to go up 3-0 overall and put the Broncos on the edge. Baptista, who was named Mountain West Player of the Week earlier this week, was able to keep the Bronco's hopes alive by winning a tough battle on court two 6-3, 7-6(2) over BYU's Leah Heimuli. The win means Baptista has now won all three of her singles matches this season in straight sets.

On court five the Cougars were able to clinch the match overall, despite a gritty effort from redshirt-junior Vanessa Timm. Ernstberger put on another strong performance, taking down the Cougars' Helen Jiao 7-6(3), 6-3. Ernstberger has begun her collegiate career going 3-0, all of which have come in straight sets.

Play was concluded with a thriller on court three. Boise State's Shauna Heffernan and BYU's Emilee Astle battled each other in a back-and-forth match that went the distance. Despite a tough performance from Heffernan, Astle ended up on top 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to finish out the day.

The 5-2 loss bumps the Broncos to 2-1 on the season. With Sunday's match against Montana canceled, the next chance for the team to bounce back will come next weekend as it heads to Utah for matches against Utah (Feb. 20) and Dixie State (Feb. 21).
