Boise State Splits Doubleheader with Cal Poly

2/26/2021 7:21:00 PM | Softball

The Broncos dropped the opener 2-0, then rallied in the bottom of the sixth to win the second game 7-6.

FULLERTON, Calif. (2/26/2021) - Boise State softball split a Friday afternoon doubleheader with Cal Poly dropping the opener 2-0, before regrouping to take the second encounter 7-6. The split moved the Broncos to 3-4 overall.

The first game was a defensive battle with Cal Poly taking the contest behind two solo home runs. The second game went back and forth with the Broncos rallying from 6-4 down in the bottom of the sixth to win it 7-6 powered by a three RBI home run by Kelsey Lalor.

Game two was highlighted by Lalor's team-leading third homer of the season and freshman pitcher Taylor Caudill coming in off the bench in relief during the fourth inning to shut down the Mustang offense to collect her first collegiate win.

"I am really proud of the way our team fought back in game two and for fighting from behind for the team win," said head coach Maggie Huffaker. "I thought the game winner from Kelsey Lalor is something she's really been fighting and working for. She's been really wanting to come through for her team, and it was awesome to see it happen for her today. I also thought that Taylor Caudill showed great poise and maturity coming in to finish the second game for us. That's something we're really going to need to rely upon throughout the entirety of the season."

GAME 1 RECAP
The opening game was a defensive battle with the lone scores coming off two Mustang solo home runs in the bottom of the second and fourth as Cal Poly won 2-0. Boise State was unable to get its bats going in the game and was held hitless in seven innings. With no hits, Boise State's offense in the game amounted to two walks and a hit by pitch.

Boise State was held in check by Cal Poly's Bailey Doherty who single handedly won the game for the Mustangs. The freshman right-handed pitcher struck out 12 as she recorded a complete game no hitter against the Broncos. In addition, Doherty sent the game winning homer over the right field wall in the second inning.

GAME 2 RECAP
The second encounter between the Broncos and Mustangs was an offensive affair as the teams combined for 23 hits and 13 runs.

After Cal Poly had opened the game with one run in the top of the first, Boise State rallied with four unanswered. The first came on Jordyn Hutchins' homer to center in the bottom of the second to tie it up 1-1.

The Blue and Orange then extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third. Bella Rocco and Alison Seng scored from third and second, respectively, on an error by the Cal Poly first baseman with Hutchins at bat. Hutchins reached first on the error, then scored from second when Ashlyn Adams singled to left center.

Unfortunately, Cal Poly answered with five runs in the top of the fourth to erase the Broncos' lead and take a 6-4 advantage. The Mustangs had seven hits in the inning, including a two RBI homer.

Boise State rallied for the win in the bottom of the sixth behind Lalor's three RBI homer over the right field wall, which also brought Autumn Bennett and Isabelle Butler across the plate for the final 7-6 score.

Caudill came in off the bench in relief during Cal Poly's five-run fourth inning to close the period out. The true freshman then proceeded to shut out the Mustangs in the final three innings by striking out five of 14 batters faced, issued only three walks and allowed one hit.
