FRESNO, Calif. – The Boise State women's tennis team rallied from losing the doubles point to defeat Nevada 4-1 to improve to 5-2 in Mountain West play Saturday morning in Fresno, Calif. The Wolf Pack sent a message to the Broncos early in the match, winning doubles courts two and three to take the early 1-0 lead.
"It was great to get another solid win on the road," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "Nevada came out and played well in doubles and we had to fight back and find a way to get ourselves back into the match, which we did. We talk a lot about our response being the most important thing no matter what comes at us and as a team I think we were really pleased to see ourselves fight back in singles to take control of the match."
The Broncos would indeed respond well, winning four straight singles matches to lift the team to its 11th win of the season. Pauline Ernstberger got things going for Boise State in singles, going up 5-0 in the first set of her court two match before the Nevada player retired. Holly Stewart dismantled Nevada's Carla Del Barrio on court three, winning 6-1, 6-2 to give the Broncos their first lead of the day 2-1.
Nicole Discenza stepped up big again for Boise State, this time winning her court six match in straight-sets 6-4, 6-3 over Mathilde Sarcelet to win her seventh-straight and put the Broncos in position to clinch the match. On court four, redshirt-junior Vanessa Timm put the match away for good with a gritty performance that saw her win 7-6 (6), 7-5 to seal the deal for Boise State.
"It was awesome to have Vanessa close it out after winning a tight first set and coming through in some clutch moments," said Roghaar. "Up and down the lineup we did a great job of competing and it allowed us to put some pressure on Nevada and ultimately got us through the door."
Boise State will now shift its focus to tomorrow's match against Fresno State. With the Bulldogs winning their match today against Utah State, both teams will be tied for third in the Mountain West standings entering tomorrow's contest.
"It was great to improve to 5-2 in conference and stay in the championship hunt," said Roghaar. "We're excited to take on Fresno State out here tomorrow. It'll be a good match and another good test for us here on the road. I know the players are fired up to get out there and compete."
