Aztecs Outlast Broncos

4/9/2021 7:22:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State women's soccer dropped its third-straight match in a loss to San Diego State, Friday at Boas Soccer Complex. The Broncos have played in five games this season with a final score of 1-0.

The Boise State (4-4-1, 4-4-1 MW) defense which had allowed a division-low seven goals coming into the match continued to stifle a potent offensive attack by the Aztecs (7-2-0, 7-2-0 MW). It was just the third time this season San Diego State has been held to one goal.

"Well I think it's two teams with strengths that oppose one another," said head coach Jim Thomas. "The best side of theirs is their attack and the best side of ours is our defense, and you saw that battle going on by our goal, and in their attacking half. I thought we were tremendous defensively, more so in the second half actually, even though we gave up the goal, some of the stuff in the first half was desperate. We looked a lot more controlled and organized in the second half."

Boise State allowed 11 shots in the first half before locking in and allowing just five in the second half. The Broncos have held their opponents to one goal or less seven times this season.

On the attacking side, the Broncos were able to fire off five shots with one on target coming in the second half off the foot of Kiara Simpson. However, the passing combinations continued to improve as the Broncos were able to build up several promising attacks from the backfield.

"I really think from the attacking perspective what we've seen improve is our ability to pass the ball, connect the ball [and] control the tempo of the game more," said head coach Jim Thomas. "Advancing [the] outside backs and getting them into attacking positions, that piece has been really really good. I think we'll have a great competition for positions upfront, there's a lot of opportunity for them in the future but I really am impressed and proud of what Kiara [Simpson] and KP [Kennedi Paul] are doing in order to get in when they fit in, I can't knock them for their effort."

Boise State prepares for senior day as it hosts UNLV in the season finale. The Broncos and Rebels played to a 0-0 draw in the opening match of the season.
